This article is about Hard Dance Mania Free B4 Midnight @ Hidden in London (UK), Fri 15 Sep 2006
Hidden has taken London’s club scene by storm since opening in October 2005, and is currently at the tail end of a very successful summer season. With the new outdoor terrace in operation, and dozens of party promotions from throughout the dance music scene hosting different events every weekend, there’s never been a dull moment at the club. Amanda, manager at the club took us through some of her summer highlights.
“This Summer? Overall I don't think we could have asked for more! The terrace was a perfect bonus on those hot summer nights. Over the season we had a truly diverse and innovative range of promoters to entertain the capitals clubbers.” Amanda says, glowing over the venue that has become somewhat of a second home to her. The initial difficulties that come with opening a new venue are now well behind her, and after many a long night working in the venue, she has succeeded in helping to make Hidden one of the most popular, acclaimed club spaces in London. It’s the aforementioned diversity of the parties held at the venue that has been part of the reason for its success – staking a claim as one of the major venues in the house, hard dance, hardcore and alternative scenes as well as hosting breaks, old skool, drum ‘n’ bass, bassline house and techno parties. When probed about the most off-the-hook parties at the club over the last few months, she struggles to narrow it down to just a few. “We've been lucky enough to have many great events over the last few months. Special mention would have to go to Hot & Spicy, Torture Garden, Planet Angel, Hard On, Love Muzik, Summit...shall I go on?”
Another thing that has helped to give the venue a distinct identity is the playful, sociable vibe that is created by the diverse, friendly crowd in attendance and the layout of the venue. Playful might not be a strong enough word though – things at Hidden get downright debauched very often! “We've seen everything and anything you could expect from the Capital’s clubbers this summer…from playing with giant Connect-4 games and Space Hoppers to dancing with next to nothing on. That’s not to mention the afterparties which have run late into the afternoon, I'm sure you can picture what they are like!” says Amanda, Other sightings include mass games of Lego and plastecine, bald men with steam coming off their heads, a worse-for-wear hardcore raver falling asleep on the staircase, 16 scantily-clad cheerleaders running about in the Blue Room, and a man wearing a badger suit brandishing a badger puppet and waving it around to freeform hardcore. Wrong isn’t even the word! And who could forget Roy? The Chinese silk pyjama wearing spiritual conductor of the dancefloor who’s been spotted at the venue virtually every week for the last few months!
“Aside from the badger, there was some guy dressed up as an emu who won our fancy dress competition! Emu fun time!” says Gordy from Freeformation, which absolutely rammed Hidden to capacity back in June. Jason from Summit, who celebrate their 1st birthday at the venue on September 23rd, tells us his classic moment of the summer. “There was this rather large bird last weekend…I think she was really drunk…but she was stomping mega-hard all round the middle bar, and grabbed this guy’s hat with cow horns on it, and starting pretending to give it head! Then she took of her shoes, and started beating loads of random guys with it, and then kissing them, and grabbing their heads and shaking them about. I've never laughed so much as I did at that. I was shit scared she was gonna come after me next!”
This weekend is your last chance to enjoy Hidden’s gorgeous outdoor terrace this Summer – complete with Thai BBQ, projection screens, loads of seating and twinkling lights that look rather splendid at night-time! Get yourself down to Hard Dance Mania before midnight on Friday to enjoy the last long hot weekend of the season and help Hidden draw it’s first magnificent summer to a spectacular close! As for next Summer, Will, owner of the club, gives some hint for what to expect. “We’ll be looking at improving the lighting and the furniture, and of course continuing with improving the venue wherever possible...watch this space!
