“The Queen of Electro House” We catch up with Lizzie Curious before her peak-time set at Electronic Sessions 1st Birthday.
DJ…vocalist…songwriter…producer…You could say Lizzie Curious has many strings to her proverbial bow and quite rightly so! 2006 saw Lizzie’s success rise and rise, with a string of storming peak-time sets around the country, a new residency in her home town of Cheltenham and finishing the year on a high note (literally you could say) with her first live vocal PA - performed to a fully-packed club. K-KLASS, upon seeing her play, said “For any promoters out there…book this girl NOW, because she will seriously rock your club.” If that is not praise enough, 2007 is looking even brighter for this hard-working, multi-talented DJ who this year has already won herself a DJ competition, set up a digital download label for her chillout music, has electro releases in the pipeline and of course more peak time sets around the country and in the big smoke. For her forthcoming set at Electronic Sessions, the ES crew crowned her The Queen of Electro House and who are we to argue with such a well deserved title! We managed to have a quick catch-up with the very busy Lizzie Curious before her peak time set at Electronic Sessions.
Hey Lizzie – how was 2006 for you then…any DJing highlights you would like to share? Well let me tell you 2006 had more highlights for me than the peroxide treatments I keep putting my hair through! I had a totally fantastic year DJing all over the UK including DJing to thousands of clubbers for the Charlys Angelz UK Tour, spinning for Unauthorised in Bristol, rocking the legendary Kurruption fancy dress boat parties on the Thames, playing for Knowwhere at Heaven and of course last but by no means least Electronic Sessions in London! I’ve also bagged myself a new residency in my home town of Cheltenham at Break Out which has quickly gained a massive following. Break Out’s xmas party was a sell-out success and I was able to not only DJ but perform a live vocal PA (dressed of course as a festive fairy ;-) which I loved and I do believe the crowd did too ;-) I’m planning more vocal PAs this year and performing more of my original material. The icing on the cake of that night was having K-KLASS be so complementary about my set and vocal performance, what an accolade to have! And of course my year would not have been complete without some gigs on that beautiful White Isle that I love so much….I played with Vicky Devine at the long-standing club night Charlys Angelz in San An which is always so much fun, plus I played in Hotel Es Vive’s fantastic club (the best hotel on the island in my opinion by the way) and I also had a last minute set at a Dusted pre-party in San An, all of which were fantastic fun.
So we hear you won the competition to headline at Elektrophonik at the beginning of February…tell us more about that?.
Well at the end of last year Elektrophonik over in Swindon ran a competition on DSI to find the headliner for their first party of 2007. It was a vote based competition and the DJ with the most votes bagged the headline set…so thanks to the support of all you guys I won! So last Saturday myself and a coachload of Team Curious set off to Swindon, we all had an uber-fantastic night, the club was rammed and even though I twisted my ankle 10mins before I was due to play that didn’t stop me having the time of my life behind the decks. It was truly a great crowd to play for and they even gave me a round of applause at the end of my set….I can’t wait to play there again! I got great feedback from the Elektrophonik crew too - I think this little summary from the Elektrophonik forum sums it up rather nicely: “If this were "PHONIK IDOL", Lizzie Curious would have bitten off Simon Cowell's head, and used it to cue up the CDJ. What can I say. Team Curious were along in full effect (massive round of applause) all the way from "Nham" and seriously making an impact on the dancefloor... Like with Ryan & Chris, Lizzie's energy behind the decks is amazing, and to see the crowd react to that, along with the filthy tunes was superb. It's easy to see why Ms Curious is one of the regions leading female DJ's at this time. Awesome show Lizzie!” (Taken from the Elektrophonik Forum).
And what about the Curious Studios…any news to report there?
I’ve also actually spent some time in January setting up a digital download label called Planet Halcyon Recordings. This is a chillout record label and the first three releases are all my own work, with my own vocals being used on Distant Shores and Beginning of the End. I love chillout music, after my many visits to Ibiza and watching those legendary sunsets at Café del Mar, chillout music holds a very special place in my heart. At the moment the tracks are on sale on Arkade and then it will be on to the major digital download sites. For all you myspace folks out there please check out the page on www.myspace.com/planethalcyon It’s just the sort of music perfect for poolside lounging, hazy Sundays and of course Ibizan sunsets. In case you were wondering, where the name comes from one of the meanings of Halcyon is “idyllically calm and peaceful; happy tranquillity” and so Planet Halcyon is where I would like people to feel they are taken when they listen to this music.
My work with electro producer Fake Hero is going really well and our track Flick My Switch, which features some sleazy Curious vocals, is going to be released on Powder Room Productions this Spring which I am very pleased about! Our track Byte Me has been going down a storm wherever I play it (and when I sung it at Break Out too!) so watch this space for release details.
I’m also about to start doing vocal work for Carl Michael (a very talented producer in Manchester) who writes beautiful, laid-back house music.
I’ve also just finished a filthy bass-driven remix of a certain Coldplay track (yes you did read that correctly) that I am very pleased with, it went down a storm at Elektrophonik and I can’t wait to give it an airing to the crowd this Saturday at Electronic Sessions.
So are you looking forward to your set at Electronic Sessions?
You bet your life I am…! I’ve been so impressed with the Electronic Sessions crew, the attention to detail that goes into in each one their events is second to none and they are top guys to boot! I’m always impressed with the line-ups, I think they bring something a little bit different and special to the London club scene. I also really like the crowd that they attract, very friendly people who are an absolute pleasure to DJ for. Coupled with that, Hidden is one of my favourite venues in London for many reasons… I have very special memories of my clubbing honeymoon period where I spent nearly every Saturday night at Trinity back in 1998/99 when the club used to be The Chunnel Club! I think Hidden as a club works brilliantly and every time I have played there I have absolutely loved it. As I’ve got a peak time set in the SubMission room I just know it’s going to go right off, so everyone better get strapped in for full-phat bass-driven electro tunes that will cause serious mayhem on the dancefloor and one Ms Curious to go absolutely mad behind the decks!
Thanks for your time Lizzie – see you there for a damn good dance!!
No problemo, I’m really looking forward to it! When I’m not behind the decks you will find me on the dancefloor for the entire night – I can’t wait! For all my news and updates please check out www.myspace.com/lizziecurious
