Congratulations on winning best producer at this year’s Hard Dance Awards. As you’ve been around from before the HDA's existed, how important do you feel they are to the hard dance scene?
Thank you very much. It’s a positive thing to highlight and celebrate achievement in any field. Its voted for by the clubbers and it’s a good way of giving them a voice. It’s important in the fact that it reminds other scenes we are still thriving.
Describe the average day in the world of BK if possible?
I'm up about 7 sorting out the family. At the studio by about 10. I spend the day either working on new music or Riot events or general label stuff. Mostly I do all my email stuff in the morning so I can concentrate on the music without any interruptions. I am a bit old school as I prefer to concentrate on music so my web stuff tends takes a back seat. Lately it’s been very hectic doing remixes and mixing compilations ext so I have been getting in about 10pm. Fridays are spent preparing for the weekends djing.
You've worked with huge artists like Lab4 and Rob Tissera in the past to name a few! What’s been your favourite collaboration to date, and who would you most like to work with in the future?
Yep I've worked with everyone from Judge Jules, Gabriel and Dresdon to Glazby and everyone in between. I don’t really have a favourite as each person is different. I do enjoy doing stuff that’s out of my comfort zone. DJ’s like Jules who have different scene to play out to are always interesting. The worst collaborations are when people bring me copies of my own records and say I want to make a tune like this. I think I didn’t need you hear to make that tune the first time around and what’s the point of ripping my self off. I would love to work with Liam from the Prodigy as I just love his stuff . Also 99% of the people I work with don’t engineer (remember folks a dj’s record is only as good as the person that mad it for them) so it would be nice having someone else at the controls.
How did it feel to hear revolution on Radio 1?
It was weird hearing it in the day played by Chris Moyles and other day time djs. I remember pulling up at a petrol station next to an old lady who had it playing in her car and thinking “If only you new how off their tits people were dancing to this at the weekend”
Many genres of dance music like Drum n Bass and UK Garage go mainstream for a short period of time and then go back underground. Could you ever see hard dance doing this, and what do you think it would mean for the scene?
I think to a degree it touched on it with hits like “Blow your mind” back in the day. Also the whole clubland thing is pretty much a watered down commercial version of the old fashioned oink sound we used to play 10 years ago. The scene was at its strongest when artists were pushing music flowered.
You’ve created many memorable tunes, (Badass springs to mind). What is the key to creating a classic, or is it just luck?
What was your initial goal behind the Nu Wave Project, and how successful has it been? It was realy to update what I did at Nukleuz and work with some new people and give my take on their sound. To make tracks we all could play ext. The album sold out and everywere I play people ask for different tracks from the album. It's been interesting seeing how different parts of the country like different sounds.
Finding your own sound that catches a moment in time with a catchy vocal or riff that will stick in your head. Easy.
What are your plans for the summer work wise and play wise?
Planning some more events. Also will be in the studio working on a new project and Generally djng around the world. Play wise I'm not sure at the mo, I'm looking forward to having a nice holiday in the sun with the family.
Where do you most like to play, the naughty north or the sexy south?
Mmm. That’s a hard one. To be honest it all depends on the party itself, It does often go in cycles of one being better than the other .
We at Summit have been clubbing since the Peach @ Camden Palace days back in 1997 and have witnessed the demise and corporate takeover of some legendary venues over the last few years like Canvas/Bagleys, Camden Palace, Turnmills and now The End. How do you feel about this and which venue or venues will you miss the most?
We have lost most of London’s best venues which is terrible. Obviously for me I will miss Turmills because I played for Trade there and its were I learnt my trade (excuse the pun). This venue is where all my music was road tested by Tony de Vit , Pete Wardman and Ian M etc. . . The End as well because this was the home of Riot and again was like a second home to me.
You're celebrating Riots 8th birthday this year (congratulations again!). What have you got in store for your anniversary?
Well we are hitting the MOS with a massive line up on April 12th. Bank holiday Sunday The residents will be there Ed real, Vinyl Groover and myself, joined by Scott Project, Anne Savage, Kutski, Andy Farley B2B with Ian M playing some trade classics and the Tidy djs funking it up. We also have Leroy Thornhill from the Prodigy and the Sharp Boys in the house room. We thought long and hard about which venue to use as the End held 800 but always felt very intimate which is essential for Sunday clubbing. So we took the very brave decision not to open the main room at MOS. After its recent refit and new upstairs room you can now have 800 in the other rooms and with a bit of jiggery pokery we have managed to re create that intimate vibe. The whole idea for riot is to have big name djs in close quarters so the party rocks.
We hear you have opened up a second studio for hire. Tell us a little more about the thinking behind that.
I am constantly asked by people if they can come in the studio and I simply don’t have the time. So we thought we would get some great engineers in to give people the chance to work with the pros. Currently we have Fabio Stein heading up the studio and is working with everyone from John Ulysses the house dj to Anne Savage. We wanted to give younger up and comings the chance to get in the studio so we opened it for hire. Its your chance to use the skills of a pro. Hopefully we may discover some great new talent. We have djs using the service as well as young producers who bring there tracks in to mixdown properly and get some tips at the same time. Studio@riotinlondon.com if you are interested.
Anyone who knows their hard dance onions will know you've been one of the biggest re mixers for over a decade. Now Trackitdown in conjunction with Nukleuz records are running a competition to all the budding producers out there to remix Revolution 2009. How excited about this are you and will you be judging the entries personally?
I love things like this another great way to find new talent. Hope fully I will get some mixes to play out. Yep ill defiantly be on the judging panel although sometimes its hard to judge something you are so close to.
What are your current top track's? Neal Thomas - The Virus (Dirty warmm up stuff)
Finally anything else you want to mention or plug?
