This article is about ONE AWSUM XMAS - The 2nd Birthday Bash @ Hidden in London (UK), Sat 05 Dec 2009
AWsum’s 2nd Birthday is only a few days away and the preparations for London’s biggest Hard Dance Xmas party AWsum style are heavily under way. The costumes are being made, the presents are being wrapped and Santa is making his way over from Lapland to make a guest appearance on the night to the South London hotspot. Headlining the Filth Room on the night is a world exclusive b2b set from Paul Glazby and Cally Gage. Check out Cally interviewing Paul below to find out what they have both been up to in 2009 and their plans for 2010.
What’s your proudest achievement in your 10 years of DJing?
Still being here 10 years on!!!
Do you still mix on Vinyl?
Not now no, the last time was my 6 hour set at Storm last year.
When is your next track due for release?
I’ve recently done a remix for Deprivation which should be out soon and I've remixed a Rich Resonate track for Toolbox, I'll be back in the studio to do some original stuff between now and Christmas for me to play over the holiday season, that will then be released early 2010.
Any mix albums around the corner?
I’ve got nothing planned at the moment, I've had talks with a big brand that struggles to sleep about doing a mix for their album, nothing us confirmed though.
What have been your 3 top gigs of 2009?
HDS at Hidden in January, Adelaide in March and Insomniacz Reunion in April
What are you doing for NYE?
NYE I'm doing the midnight set at Frantic, then up to Insomniacz in Skegness and then finishing off at Gatecrasher on NYD.
Is there still a clubbing North / South Divide?
I don't think so no, that went out with VHS tapes!!!!!
What has VC got planned for 2010?
More of the same I guess, we've got some great artists on board now and we've had a strong year with our Hardbox series, we'll just keep pushing on.
Did you think that when you wrote ‘Kick It’ with Ingo all those years ago, that it would become the classic track that it is today and be the closing track of every Tidy Weekender?
No not at all, I do remember going home that night though and listening to it over and over, I thought it was something pretty special, when it came out it got fairly crap reviews but I think it's stood the test of time, it's 10 years old next year!!!
Ben Stevens, Tim Clewz, Adam M – who’s the next wonderkid of filth?
I think it's got to be Adam, Ben has a more varied style like myself but Adam is Bang Bang Bang all the way, it's fun doing B2B with him!!!
I’ve decided to invite myself round to yours and Kelly’s for dinner, what’s on the menu?
Sound, when should we expect you? How about Butternut Squash Soup to start, Steak in pepper cream sauce for main and 10 minute Trifle for dessert!
What one thing do you hope that Santa brings you for Xmas?
JC Santana's '4 Pillars of Human Movement' DVD or a sex swing!
What has been your highlight of 2009?
Wow, I’ve been lucky to have so many this year that it would be difficult to choose just one - let me think.
I think the 1 gig that stands out from 2009 has to be playing on the main stage b2b with my other half, Andy Whitby at Magna for Tidy earlier in the year. You just can’t describe the feeling you get when you step out onto that stage and see the room so full as far back as I could see – it was absolutely incredible and a memory I’ll always have.
What have been your 3 Top Tracks?
It’s difficult to narrow it down to just 3, but if I had to choose then they would be:
MDA & Spherical meets Cally Gage - Feel It Rock N Rolla – Synthesia Masif DJ’s – Passion (MDA & Spherical remix)
What was Ibiza like?
It was my 7th trip to Ibiza this summer and was definatley the best yet.
I went with 13 of my closest friends and we all stayed in the plushest villa you could imagine, it was amazing. To be honest, we didn’t go out as much as we normally do but I still had the best time ever.
I played for Atomik at Boho’s on the night that I landed and it was brilliant – I was on pretty late, so it was nice to see that so many people had stuck around for my set.
A little birdy tells me Paul was your favourite DJ when you were a Hard House clubber?! Where did you go and see him play? What was your favourite ever Glazby set?
Haha, yes he was – I used to follow him around like a bad smell, as well as Andy Farley and Tara Reynolds. I just couldn’t get enough of watching these guys play, I loved them!! I went all over the country to watch Paul play and used to just stand near the DJ box and stare at him mixing!!
I’m not sure what my favourite set from him was, but I do remember the first time I saw him play and the first time I realised that the harder edge sound was what I preferred. It was for Sundissential I think and it was at The Sanctuary in Birmingham (quite a few years ago now!) – he was playing a 4 hour set and I danced from start to finish, it was amazing. He played all the big tunes at the time and the ones that we call classics now – tracks like 99.9, Motherfucker, Beautiful, Full Metal……..
Another little birdy tells me you love Swedish House Mafia?! When did you first see them play? Will you ever play stadium electro like that?
The first time I saw the Swedish House Mafia was at Pacha in Ibiza this summer. My main goal of going to Ibiza this year was to see DJ’s that I hadn’t seen before and to experience different genres of music. So DJ’s that I managed to catch were Adam Sheridan, Paul Van Dyke, Kissy Sellout, Fatboy Slim and of course the Swedish House Mafia.
I haven’t really listened to Electro/House music before, so really didn’t know what to expect but I was completely blown away by it all. Pacha is such a beautiful club and the music that the Swedish House Mafia was playing was incredible, it was a lot dirtier and harder than I expected and I was completely in my element. I was hoping to catch them at Brixton Academy a couple of weeks ago and am gutted that I didn’t make it. But I’m keeping my eye out on their tour dates and can’t wait to see them again soon.
I’m not sure if I’ll ever play stadium electro/house – but you can never say never can you?!!
You just played at AWsum Escape. What was it like?
AWsum just keeps getting better and better and with each party and every gig I play for them, I love it even more. I was expecting AWsum Escape to be a good party anyway, but it beat my expectations completely – it was amazing and I loved every minute of my set. Thank you to everyone that came along to the party, you definitely made it a special night for me.
You have played Westfest many times. Why is it so special?
I have been lucky enough to play at WestFest 4 years in a row now and it never lets me down!! It is 1 of the biggest gigs that’s in my diary and is always rammed year after year.
I think the reason it is so special is mainly because of the clubbers – I think that it’s an event they have circled in their diaries for months beforehand and is one of the biggest events that they attend each year. Because of this and because they get so excited, it just rubs off on you and you can’t help but have a good time.
Slammin Vinyl have supported me for quite a few years now and I’m so grateful for that. Running events at this sort of scale takes so much time and planning, yet everything seems to run so smoothly. The amount of effort they put into each event, with the décor and lighting etc, is amazing – each arena looks wicked and this just makes it an even better party for the clubbers, as they really know that they’re going to get looked after and have a night to remember.
You went to HTID In The Sun for the 2nd time this year. How did your Hardcore set go? Will we see you playing more Hardcore in 2010?
I did and I can’t wait to get back out there next year already!
My hardcore set was so, so good – I absolutely loved it. As I don’t tend to play that many hardcore sets, I was a little nervous about my set and really wasn’t sure how busy it would be – but the room was absolutely rammed, I couldn’t believe it. My good friend Gammer was with me and we actually ended up playing b2b, I had the biggest grin on my face the whole time and was jumping around behind the decks like a complete idiot. I was actually pretty sad when the hour had passed, it always goes so quickly!!
Next year I have been booked to play hard house and b2b with Gammer again too – it’s going to be so much fun. But you never know what might happen really, I might get the urge to climb up behind the decks and play a few hardcore tracks at some point!!
What can we expect from your very special set with Paul Glazby at AWsum's 2nd Birthday?
I couldn’t believe it when I found out that Paul had agreed to this b2b, it’s a set that I’ve always wanted to play, so it’s going to be pretty special to me.
I will definitely be digging deep into my darker side for this, so just make sure you come along to watch – you won’t be disappointed, I’m sure of it.
