This article is about Hidden Core "The Launch & Gordy's Birthday" @ Hidden in London, Sat 11 Jul 2009
The launch of London's new regular Hardcore night Hidden Core is less than 4 weeks away, so we get the lowdown from promoter and birthday boy Gordy about the plans for the event and his history in Hardcore.
1) You were involved with music from an early age. What did you used to do when you were growing up?
I first got into music at a very young age of 8 when I was in a world famous choir and used to play piano, clarinet and saxophone. This progressed into Dance Music at the age of 12 and I went on to do a degree in Audio Technology and Music Business Studies.
2) What was your first full time job in the Dance Industry?
My first Dance Music job was in 2005 where I was working for Kevin Energy’s Nu Energy Collective as Online Store Manager which led on to Operations Managers till 2008. I was the agent for all NEC artists including Kevin Energy, Sharkey, Odyssey etc, record label management for all the labels under the NEC umbrella, events management for Freeformation plus keeping the website up to date with content etc. I had so much fun working with the NEC and learnt loads about the industry from them so big up Kevin, Sharkz and all of Team Rave!
3) Is it true you deliberately play Freeform when Chloe has a headache?
Yeah I do because Freeform keeps you sane and is good for the brain!
4) What was so good about Gammer at the last Freeformation?
Gammer absolutely smashed it at the last Freeformation especially his Purist Freeform set in the Jam room! He showed us why he’s the UK’s Number 1 Hardcore DJ so if you missed it make sure you come check him out on Sat 11th July!
5) What was your first Hardcore event? Who was playing and who made your night?
The first Hardcore event I went to was Helter Skelter Anthology at The legendary Sanctuary in Milton Keynes back in March 1997. I had been listening to loads of tape packs my older mates had given to me at school but never been to an event before and was really excited about going. When I walked into the main arena at The Sanctuary I was totally blown away by the size of the venue, the production, the atmosphere and most of all the music – I’ve been hooked to the Core ever since!
DJs playing on the night were Bunter, Brisk, Unknown, Dougal, Hixxy, Ramos, Seduction, Slipmatt, Vibes, Vinylgroover but the sets of the night for me were Force & Styles with MC Junior and Clarkee with MC Sharkey!
6) Rumour has it you like Jump Up and Jungle as much as Hardcore. What DJs and Producers do you rate and where do you go raving?
I like to listen to all sorts of music but I grew up mainly raving to Hardcore and Drum & Bass so these are still my favourite to listen to. You can’t beat brockin’ out to some bad boy jungle!
The DJs and Producers that I rate are Brookes Brothers, Andy C, Commix and Logistics.
You can usually catch me at Mooooooooooooondance, Son of Dance and Ram @ Matter!
7) What is the best all time Hardcore compilation and why?
Best of Bonkers mixed by Hixxy & Recon, Sharkey & Druid and Scott Brown as it has all the huge Hardcore anthems from the last 10 years!
8) What Hardcore MC's make you get on the dancefloor?
It has to be Sharkey, Whizzkid, Odyssey and Ribbz.
Sharkey because he is just pure comedy on the mic, doesn’t take himself too seriously and is the number 1 entertainer. Whizzkid because he has loads of different skills and knows how to get the crowd hyped. Odyssey because of his notorious vocal scratching and underground rhymes, Ribbz because he is a host MC and let’s the music do the talking but still keeps the crowd entertained with his minimal style.
9) You worked at Tranzmission. What was the highlight for you?
I’ve been to every Tranz-mission before but this was the first time I’ve worked at the event and was amazed by all the hard work and effort that went into the production of the event. The 2 highlights of the night for me were raving it up with Mr Paterson to Brisk & Wotsee in Hardcore Hardcore arena and the Andy Whitby & Matt Lee (Gammer) set in the Frantic Arena which was out of this world!
10) Sharkey and Gammer headline Hidden Core, why?
Gammer is one of the true pioneers of the Hardcore scene right now with innovative productions and DJ sets. He deservedly won best DJ at the 2009 Hardcore Heaven awards and will smash up the floor at Hidden Core!
Sharkey is a great entertainer and amazing producer who plays everything from underground Freeform, party rave tunes and vocal anthems. He recently mixed the latest Bonkers album and is working on an artist album so expect to hear some exclusive new tunes as well as some dancefloor anthems. His MC performances are legendary and will have you in stitches with his Team Rave antics so make sure you don’t miss it!
11) What new names in Hardcore will headline the Hardcore scene in 5 years?
Keep an eye out for the following DJs who deserve to be headlining the Hardcore raves Darwin, Technikore, Audio Junkie & Stylus, K Complex, Arkitech and Weaver.
12) Who can we expect to see at future Hidden Cores?
Hidden Core aims to cover whole spectrum of the Hardcore scene and caters for everyone so the next events will include headline DJs as well as showcasing new talent with sets from the likes of Joey Riot, Chris Unknown, Kevin Energy, Arkitech, Whizzkid, Audio Junkie & Stylus, Al Storm, Andy Whitby, Vibes & Livelee, Slipmatt, Clodhopper, Obie and Darwin.
13) As someone who loves Hard Dance as well as Hardcore can we expect to see any Hard Dance taking it harder at future Hidden Core events?
As both genres are getting closer together with artist from both styles playing and producing the two different styles we are going to express this within the future line ups and plan to integrate the two at Hidden Core events.
14) Will you be wearing one of your trademark Vests to Hidden Core?
Ha ha! Yes I will definitely be wearing one of my trademark vests and will be showing off my Ibizan tan! Lol. I may even have a Hidden Core vest to wear – watch out for Hidden Core merchandise coming soon!
15) Will there be Dancers at Hidden Core?
There will be the lovely Twisted Bliss and Addicted Dancers at Hidden Core who will be adding an extra element to the event in their own unique ways.
16) Use 10 Words to tell everyone why they cant miss Hidden Core?
If you love Hardcore then you will love Hidden Core!
