Son of Dance Interviews DJ Phantasy!
Son of Dance Interviews DJ Phantasy!

Son of Dance makes a mighty return this Summer to bring you JUNGLISM! On Saturday 16th June join us for a night of pure Jungle vibes with the biggest and best acts in the scene! Here is a brief insight into one of the legendary Jungle DJs performing on the night – DJ Phantasy!

How did you get into the rave scene?

My friend Donald told me many moons ago about these things called ‘warehouse parties’ and said that I should come with him to check them out. So the next sat night we all went in search for our first Acid House party and from that moment I was hooked. Such amazing vibes under one roof and everyone happy and enjoying themselves.

Who gave you your first break as a DJ?

Really it was Biology and Jarvis who ran it. We met outside clubs flyering and he asked if I had any VIPs for the party I was flyering. I asked him if he had any VIPs for his and he said yeah, link him in the week, so I did and then I started working for Biology, flyering, selling tickets etc. I was at a show with DJ Face in South London ran by Biology and they needed someone to go on to do an early slot and I asked if I could and they said yes. At that moment I knew this is what I wanted to do.

What’s a typical day in the life of DJ Phantasy?

Phone calls, arranging and organising so much stuff from studio, artists, events, live shows and working with some amazing artists on various projects that are ongoing right now. As my twitter says, involved in more things than you may realise.

Vinyl vs CDs?

I’m afraid to say I’ve moved with technology and I use CDs now. Gutted but it’s a sign of the times and you have to embrace technology or you get left behind. But don’t get me wrong.. I love using the CDJs because you can manipulate them more and be more creative with the music.

What younger artists do you rate at the moment?

Well, to be honest I got a lot of love for all the young artists out there because I know how hard it can be and I think it would be unfair to just name a few when there’s so many doing great things. I will just add that no matter how hard things become and how frustrated you get, stick with it because hard work pays off.

You have been DJing for over 20 years, what have been your 3 most favourite gigs?

Wow, all of them have been great in their own way, even the crap ones haha.
That’s such a hard question to answer as whilst I’m thinking, about 30 events have popped into my mind and they are just from last year and this year.

But from back in the day it has to be Fantazia Summertime in Bournemouth. What an amazing event that was.

I know you are going to think this is just a plug but I swear, the vibes at the last few innovations in the sun have been so amazing and it just keeps getting better and better each year.

Moondance at Camden Palace was off the hook last year as well and was even more special for me as Camden is the first club I legally went to just when I turned 18. I remember the guy asking for my ID and I pulled out my driving license and said something like, 18 the other day haha. I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it was only 3 or so years ago lol.

You have also been jetting off to play all over the world – where are your top 3 places to visit and why?

I love Germany because the crowd there are amazing.
Australia is always a great time and of course Canada… did you know I was the first DJ to bring our sound to Canada many years ago. The only DJs there were Kenny Ken and myself. And I am the one who linked the promoters up with all the rest of the UK acts.

The only place I’ve not been to but I’d really love to go to is Japan.

If a movie was made about your life, who would be the lead actor and what would the film be called?

Haha, you know what. He don’t look nothing like me whatsoever but he is such a top bloke and I’ve weirdly got to know him over the last few months…(long but funny story) but it would have to be my main man Adam Deacon, the Bafta Award winner. He is such a lovely bloke who gives time to everyone and is also as funny as f**k and to be fair, I think that sums me up.
It would be called, LIVING THE DREAM!

If you were stuck on a desert island, which 3 essential items could you not live without?

My Mrs & Kids
My Phone
My TV

We are coming over for dinner, what’s on the menu?

Toast.

If you weren’t in the music industry what would you be doing?

On a building site.

What are your Top 3 Jungle Tunes?

Again way too many to choose from. Every track has its own story and moment in time and that’s what makes that era of music so special and still deep in peoples minds right now after so many years.

Moondance are joining Old Skool in the Sun in September this year – can you tell us more about the event?

I can tell you its going to be off the hook and I know the vibes are going to be sickkkkkkkk.
Its on from 7th September to 9th September and is being held at the same location that iNNOVATiON in the Sun is held. Everything is there ready and waiting to make sure your holiday experience is one you will treasure forever.

Moondance, Fantazia & Epidemik are all joining forces to bring what is sure to be the biggest Old Skool Show in Europe with people coming from all over to party under one roof.
For more info visit oldskoolinthesun.com and you will be able to get full line ups and prices and learn about the extra activities that go on whilst out there…
The yacht parties are immense and are an absolute must.

Why can you not afford to miss Junglism on Sat 16th June?

With all moondance / son of dance related parties, they are like family reunions and this helps bring that unique vibe to each party. I know people who don’t go out anywhere until these special shows are put on and when they are there, they want to party like they haven’t before.

I remember at one show, Funki and Will were watching the crowd during my set on the monitors and all they could see was everyone’s hands in the air, singing along and having the times of their lives. These shows always bring these vibes and that’s why I look forward to playing at them so much. So, make sure you get your tickets ASAP cause it’s going to be a partyyyyyyyy !!!
