This article is about Comfortably Numbed presents "Blissed 'n Twisted" with Lee Mortimer @ Inigo Bar in London (UK), Fri 20 Oct 2006
It's been official for a while but now you have it in writing, we’d like to present to you our newest resident:- Mr Jon Fynn. Hailing from the S of A, Jon has played across the seas in Brazil, Turkey, Portugal, and has established himself as a Full time DJ/Producer here in the UK with a string of releases on Total Wipes & Level Recordings. Bringing nothing but good vibes, Jon is responsible for launching the Comfortably Numbed Sessions on www.worlddancefm.com and with his personal taste in twisted, jacking, sleazy beats that make you move just as much as they make you think, it's no surprise as to why we wanted Mr Fynn on the board of all things Numbed...
CN: So, Mr. Fynn, we’ll start off with a warm up question... Why the move from South Africa to the UK?
JF: Apart from running from the law, I just wanted to get a piece of the big bad world, South Africa, as good as it is, is a goldfish bowl, in that it’s pretty self contained and set in its way, I wanted to see some crazy places and rack up some stories I can tell when I’m a grisly old man and the UK's a good place to start.
CN: Now for the all too common question of who or what made you decide that you wanted to be a DJ/Producer and take it so seriously that it became your day job?
JF: I’ve always been in to music one way or another, I used to play drums (badly) in a rock band and organise house parties, and a friend from London sent me a Toni De Vit mixtape and I was hooked on everything about it, the mixing, the music, the people, everything. From then I started buying records and getting friends to send me UK mixtapes, I’d go to the clubs and just watch the DJ the whole night, all that stupid shit you do when you want a piece of the action. I knew I’d never be happy if I wasn’t part of it all, So I just decided it was gonna be music or living under a bridge with a dirty blanket and a dog.
CN: You’ve played in some awesome countries around the world like Brazil, Turkey, and Portugal... Which has the best crowds, what has been your favourite and please make sure there are naked ladies in this story or the interview stops here?
JF: Tough call! All were fantastic, but I’d probably go with Turkey, they just don’t stop and the filthier, and harder, the better! And really good, hospitable people who live for music, food and sunshine! The resident Dj's I was playing with treated me to one of the craziest weeks of my life, and none of them spoke a word of English! Oh - and there were naked ladies everywhere! ;)
CN: Apart from the Carnival & Football Celebrations, Brazil is also known as a pretty hard core country, were there any ‘City of God’ type moments while you were there?
JF: Yeah, Rio was really dodgy, the kids are tough as nails and everyone seems to have a gun. 2 of the guys I was with were mugged, one of them drunkenly chased the mugger down with a rock and managed to get half his money back! The football matches were the craziest, 180 000 people going mad for local club teams, and the cops ride around on horses with rusty swords… they should do that here.
CN: You have some awesome stuff coming out on Level recordings, one of the tracks creating a bit of a Quirk & Stir is “Beepin’ and Grinding”. When is the official release and how have the responses from the promos been?
JF: The official release date is mid November, its been a long time coming! Responses have been really, really good, so I’m looking forward to getting it out there, it’s definitely my favourite EP out of the tracks I’ve done.
CN: While most of us are behind our desks doing our 9 to 5 wishing for the weekend to arrive, you’re at home watching South Park for inspiration and doing a smattering of production in-between. Have you got any tracks waiting to go that you’re shopping around to labels and what can we expect from you over the coming months?
JF: Ha ha....good ol South Park, yes, got a lot of stuff in the pipeline which I’m really excited about, and talking to a few different labels that I enjoy as a dj and producer. Expect the unexpected, I’m into a lot of different stuff at the moment, working with some great new producers and artists trying to get creative rather than jumping on the trend bandwagon, saying that though, you can be assured it’s still stuff that will throw you around the dance floor!
CN: There have been some Chinese whispers about a digital label that you and others will be able to unleash your productions on. Can you slip us a little info on what the plans are for the label?
JF: Still very much in an infant stage, it’s an idea which we (Me & 2 PhUnKeD uP) have been kicking around for a while. The label will be a platform to get our collective productions out, music that we enjoy and make, rather than music the big labels are after, as well as an outlet for up and coming producers whose music makes us think. With e-commerce and the web the way it is today there really are no limits, it would also be nice to have more control over our music and the directions we take.
CN: Every Friday from 14:00 – 16:00 people can tune in to worlddancefm.com for your Comfortably Numbed Sessions Show. What can people expect on the show and have you got your radio voice down yet?
JF: Expect great local and international guests, unreleased tracks that make us shake our asses, new tracks that are doing damage in the clubs, bad jokes and the weather report...I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the mic, guests seem to get it in the first ten minutes, then I have to drag them off it! I just think I sound like a Paedophile with a sore throat. ;)
CN: Is living the dream of DJing and Producing full time as glamorous and ‘rock star’ as we would love to think? Is it all big breasted beauties, hot tubs and champagne, limos, first class plane tickets and enough free class A’s to kill an Elephant?
JF: Well, give it a couple of years for the rock star level, don’t think I’m quite there yet! Making and playing music full time is a dream come true, and I wouldn’t change it, but there’s nothing glamorous about dragging your record bag 3 miles through the rain on Tuesday night looking for a taxi! Saying that though the out of town gigs and bookings can get quite surreal. It is a great life, but it’s hard work and you’ve got to be really disciplined with booze and drugs, something I’m slowly learning;), I guess it’s a lot different at the top when you’ve got your agent and you’re only playing 2 gigs a week which brings in £10,000...ask me again in 3 years. ;)
CN: We’ve heard that in your spare time, you like to relax with Horlicks & Origami while watching South Park – If you could be one of the Characters from the South Park show – who would it be and why?
JF: Its gotta be chef, he's smooth, he's got soul, he's always surrounded by honeys, and he can solve every problem with a song. Nice.
