Sharam Jey the interview

This article is about Inhale @ Inigo Bar in London (UK), Fri 13 Jun 2008

Hi there sharam, thanks for spending some time answering some questions for us today.

So how has 2008 been for you so far? Any highlights?

The last 7-8 months I was solely working on my upcoming second arttist album. Now it's finished and will be out later this year.
That was and will definetely be the highlight of this year for me.

What are you doing for the summer? will you be doing any major festivals? Is the summer time your busiest time of the year, or are you off to put your feet up somewhere sunny?

Because I did not know how long I will have to work on my album I have kept my schedule free for this ummer. So I will slow it a bit down this year concering gigs. But I will defintely play some festivals and open-airs this year. And I will up and running next summer with my new album packed. This year I will relax somewhere on an island.

You are playing for Inhale @ Inigo on the 13th June - do you like the london crowds? do you prefer massive audiences or a more intimate venue? We are small, but perfectly formed!

Of course I am looking forward to play in London again. I haven't been here this year so far. I absolutely like the british crowd as they have always supported me. And I like both small and huge venues. I like the more intimate feel of a small club gig, You are very much more in contact with the crowd which is great but of course it's impressive to play in front of a lot of thousand people too.

What has been your most successful gig? And which has been the one you personally enjoyed the most? If you could play anywhere else in the world - where would it be?

I played a lot of gigs and I liked most of them. The most important thing about djing for me is to play in front of a crowd who really is into the music you are playing. But two of my favourite gigs were the Electraglide-Festival in Tokyo 2006 and the Loveparede in Berlin 2003

Do you have any non-work related ambitions left? If you hadn't have become a successful dj/producer - what else would you have done instead?

Well, I would defintely be a professional football player or a gourmet-chef.

Which to you prefer - djing or producing?

I love both. I like to entertain the audience with my set and make them go crazy and party to it but I also like to be in my studio and be creative, producing new stuff for me or for other people.

You have done mixes for the likes of Moby, Mylo, Faith No More, Faithless, Salt N Peppa, Warren G - which has been the one you are most proud of? Is there a track you've wanted to do but haven't been able to for some reason?

Actually I am proud of all the remixes I have done. Because it means the artists have become aware of your production and what you are doing and liked it. One of the remixes I have done and that did not make it on the main CD-single was the remix for Hella Good by No Doubt I did back then. But the record company finally released it on a very limited dj-romo 12".

'4 Da Loverz' was a massive success - do you think that was the thing that thrust you to infamy? Or do you think it was prior to that? Were you ready to be front page of DJ Mag?

Well, after 15 years and 100 productions on different labels it was time to release this artist album. You can reach a much broader audience because you are not as limited as you are with a 12", you can use a lot more sounds and different styles. So I am really looking forward to the release of this second artist album and maybe make it on the cover of DJ Mag again ,-)

What is your most favourite possession?

My studio and my latest Mac Pro

Who is your idol?

I have a lot of different idols and it's really difficult to pick one. I am inspired by a lot of people like Prince, Bruce Lee, Funkadelic.....

You have been djing since the early 90's - do you think the club scene has altered dramatically in the last 20-odd years? What has been the biggest change? Do you yourself feel that your 'shows' have followed these trends or have you tried to go your own way?

Of course the club scene has changed a lot in the past 20 years but for me that's one of the strongest characteristics of that scene. When this whole dance music thing started nobody would have thought that it would become such a relevant music.
And you can always say back then it was so-and-so and that it was better or worse than today. But change is always a good thing. And as an artist you have to adapt new styles but also enhance them and make them your own.

Do you think that German dance music and UK dance music have moved in the same directions?

I don't know but a lot of british djs are playing german dance music at the moment and vice versa. And of course I find it great that so much good music is emerging from Germany at the moment. But finally I don't think that there is that much difference between the two countries and their club scene.

"No compromises" is your motto. Has there ever been a time when you have had to give in? Have you ever been told to turn it down a bit?!

Actually not. I am doing what I like the most and have been doing this for the past 20 years now. But of course as you are getting older you slow it down a bit more.

Seen any good films recently?

I am actually a movie junkie. And I am permanently watching any movie during all those flights I have to take. The last one I saw and really liked was Juno.

When you are not making or playing music, what is your favourite thing to do?

Cooking for friends or playing euro2008 soccer game

And what is your favourite thing to eat afterwards?

Sushi or any kind of Asian food

Thank you very much for your time. I look forward to seing you on the 13th!
