This article is about Grin @ Inigo Bar in London (UK), Fri 23 May 2008
Hey Ms Curious, how have you been what have you been doing with yourself during the Sunny periods this month?
Hey Batch, I’m good thanks, absolutely adoring this sunny weather, although I have been cultivating a lovely studio tan lately!
You will be making your Grin Debut This Friday. Tell us your thoughts on this.
I’m really looking forward to playing for Grin… I’ve had some wicked nights out at Inigo, both on the dancefloor and behind the decks, it just cultivates such a crazy atmoshphere! As you know, since I met Jack at Turnmills in March 2007 I’ve been following and supporting the Grin sound ever since, I’m looking forward to experiencing a Grin night “in the flesh” finally. The ethos of the night embodies everything I think is good about the house music scene, good music, good DJs and lots of fun!
Talk us through a day in the life of Lizzie Curious.
During the week I usually wrench myself out of bed somewhere between 8 & 9, grab some brekkie and spend an hour or so online, checking out new tunes, promoting Break Out (the monthly night I run in Cheltenham with Simon) and any other admin I need to do. Then it’s up to the Curious studios for the day. Being a typically creative person, I tend to have several things on the go at once. For example this week, I’ve just put the finishing touches to a remix for Steve Noxx (you can hear the results on myspace), I’m remixing a track for ubercool electro band Cassette Elektrik’s summer EP, finishing off some IDs for Robbie Rivera’s radio show and I’m also laying down the ideas for what I plan to be the first track on my second album. The song literally came to me in my sleep on Sunday night and I’ve been singing it ever since! Having spent a day happily locked away in my musical world I’ll then head to the gym (I’m getting really into body combat and body pump classes) and then usually in the evening I will chill out for a couple of hours, have a mix or see friends for dinner.
Your album ‘Different Things’ spans through a range of different styles. What or who were the main influences behind this? I really wanted to create an artist album that showcased my versatility as a songwriter, vocalist and producer so that people could see all the different facets of Lizzie Curious. I wouldn’t say I was influenced by anything or anyone in particular, but a lot of the songs draw on personal experiences, or are inspired by situations/people that I have come across which I have then used to create my own song from.
House legend Robbie Rivera has titled his Album ‘Star Quality’ after a track that features vocal by one Lizzie Curious. How did you come to work with Robbie and what was it like to work with him?
I wrote Star Quality for Robbie back in April of 2007. My publisher had sent Robbie a few of my vocals and he sent me over a backing track with a brief to write a vocal in my sleazy dirty style. It was in fact the first topline that I pitched professionally, the vocal pretty much came to me straight away, so I recorded it in my studio and sent it back over to Miami. The very next day Robbie came back and said he loved the vocal and was going to use it on his album, which I was, of course, absolutely over the moon about! He’s really supportive of my work and after hearing my latest bootleg remix of Bullet In The Gun has said he wants me to do a track for Juicy and I’m also hoping to do more vocals for him later in the year. He’s also booked me to play at his night JuicyIbiza out at Amnesia in Ibiza in July!
Which dance music DJ’s and Producers are making you hot this Summer and what will be in your box both new and classic?
I’m all over Steve Noxx, I’ve been supporting him since early 2007 and his productions are really hitting the mark for me, he’s making some wicked bootlegs and also original tunes that always find their way into my sets. Kelevra is another one to watch, he really is the master of twisted, quirky beats and I’m super- excited to have him headlining at Break Out in July. I also think Jack Michaels is destined for really big things, having seen him play, technically he is excellent and he has fantastic productions and brilliant crowd interaction. If you ever get a chance to see Nick Fisher (Elektrophonik), he is truly an awesome DJ - which is why we get him to play regularly at Break Out. Other producers floating my boat include Blende, Aaren San, Twocker, Miles Dyson, Minimalistix, Nino Anthony and of course Robbie Rivera. I’ve been busy making my own bootleg remixes of tunes I regard as classics which will be a mainstay in my sets over the summer, including Sia – Breathe Me and Planet Perfecto’s riff-tastic Bullet In The Gun. I’ve got a few more that I’m finishing off but I won’t be shouting about them till they’re finished.
If the Grin Boys came round to your house for dinner – what would you make us to eat mmm yummy?
Loads of fajitas with a spicy veggie chili, homemade guacamole & salsa, grated cheese, loads of salad and superchilled corona beers to wash it all down with.
I have started to catch the odd episode of ‘Heroes’ recently. Many DJ’s / Aritst often find it difficult to sit and watch a lot of TV. When you get the time, what shows do you like to kick back to? I hate to admit it but I am fixated on the car-crash reality TV series that is Britain’s Next Top Model, it’s hilarious but also horribly addictive. I also love The Apprentice, Friends, Supernatural and Sex In The City. I also love watching nature programmes….and, believe it or not, anything to do with dinosaurs. I was really into dinosaurs when I was a kid and still love watching programmes about them now on the discovery channel. In fact I think in another life maybe I was a paleontologist!
Other than playing lots of music by Grin Recordings what can we expect from Lizzie over the next rest of this year? I’ve really been investing time into getting my engineering skills in the studio up to the same standard that I feel my vocals are at…. I’m proud of the fact that I engineer and produce all my own work in my own studio! There aren’t many females DJs out there who sing, songwrite, produce and engineer their own material! I do love writing so many different genres, but I feel with my artist album I’ve got a bit of that out of my system, so I’m really focusing now on writing tracks and remixes that I’ll specifically play out at my gigs. I’ve also got collaborations lined-up over the summer with Jack Michaels, Andy Boph, Kelevra & Steve Noxx which I’m really looking forward to. On the DJ front, I’ve got some really brilliant gigs coming up over the next few months, from Grin this Friday, to Vodoo Dolls (an all female DJ night) in Reading on the 30th, then in June & July things are hotting up for the summer: Break Out on 6th June & 4th July in my hometown of Cheltenham, a University Ball in London playing alongside the Scratch Perverts, the summer ElectronicSessions Boat Party (the infamous sell-out boat parties of which I am proud to be resident), a return to Elektrophonik in Swindon and then off to the White Isle at the end of July to play at Charlys Angelz and JuicyIbiza @ Amnesia.
Some Quick Fire Questions
Full English Breakfast or Healthy Eating?
Healthy eating (unless I’m hungover in which case it’s a full veggie English breakfast)
Simon Cowell or Piers Morgan?
It’s all about Simon Cowell.
Favourite Colour?
Hot pink
Last thing that you bought from HMV?
The Simian Mobile Disco album (fab) and a Tricky CD (which was dire and I was really disappointed).
How long do you take to get dressed before a gig?
Well whatever I seem to do I always seem to be in a rush, so I tend to be quite quick I think compared to a lot of girls. I reckon about 30mins and I’ll be at the door with my record bag ready to go.
What are your Plans over the Bank Holiday Weekend?
To go completely and utterly nuts at Grin on Friday, with my Team Curious all in full effect. On Saturday, when I finally surface, I’ll be in the studio for a bit and also hopefully catch some rays if the sun makes an appearance. On Sunday it is one of my good friend’s birthday celebrations, so we’ve got a fancy dress dinner party which I am sure will go on for most of Monday too!
