GIRLCORE!

This article is about Vive La France! @ Jacks in London (UK), Sat 14 Jul 2007

In an industry still vastly overrun by men, there's an increasing number of sisters doing it for themselves. I'm not just talking about female DJs - but parties and businesses run and staffed entirely by women. London sensations Girlcore are one such entity - and they're hosting a room at a special Bastille Party called Vive La France! at JAX in London Bridge this Saturday, alongside headliner David K (Cocoon / Freak 'n' Chic). Laetitia from Girlcore filled us in on her saucy little soiree....

How did Girlcore start then?

Girlcore started last summer. We all started to hang out together a lot, go to parties / concerts / festivals together. It was always great fun. One night 20 of us went to a concert then clubbing, everyone thought it was a hen night but no, it was just Girlcore getting messy. We then started to help each other on various projects as we all work in media / music / communication related industries. And in February we started our own night at Catch in East London which is on every last Thursday of the month.

So...are boys allowed to come and party?

Of course boys are allowed in the parties - they love it and play the game and dress up according to the theme. We also have a few special boys who help us with our parties, coming early getting everything ready etc. But the core group that makes decisions and takes initiatives is girls only.

What can we expect to see at a Girlcore party?

A lot of surprises, a lot of glitter, party music, a lot of smiles, a lot of props… We always put effort in props and decorations to make the night more fun as well as for the music. We follow a theme each night: we had a dragcore party where boys were girls and girls were boys, another time we built a love chapel on stage and married people, and the last one we organised a festival with tents and glowsticks. Some girls even brought a bag of mud!

What can we expect to hear? And which comes first – the music or the other stuff?

The music goes with the other stuff. We always try to combine the theme with the line up. We usually have a Girlcore DJ debut set, residents like Isa GT and Cherise Got Loki, plus one or two headliner DJs (Hannah Holland, Nadia Ksaiba, Anne Savage) and bands. We play real party music.

What’s been the raciest/wildest party you’ve hosted then?

I reckon the craziest one we did was when we had this love chapel on stage. We got a friend to be the priest, got candy rings, made marriage certificates, did a remix of the wedding song and each time it would come on, the 'priest' would marry couples. And the rest of the crowd would throw rice, glitter and shaving cream at them. It was hilarious.

So you’re part of this Vive La France! thing on Saturday night in London...what’s the connection?

Yes we are hosting the second room of this warehouse party. We have been asked to do second rooms at a few London parties, but this is our biggest event to date. So we are really excited about it and our putting double the effort on line-up and props.

Do French people like to party then? Are they up there with the world’s finest hedonists?

Most French are what we call ‘bons vivants’. They enjoy all the good things in life, so partying is one of them. With 300,000 Frenchies living in London now, it should be pretty rocking.

Who have you got playing for you at VLF then? What do they sound/look/smell like?

I’m really excited because we got Muriel Moreno to play for us. She used to be in this rock band called Niagara that was huge in the 80ies. She now DJs and is really well-respected in France. She’s like the French Annie Lennox I would say. Isa Gt is our main resident; she rocks it out at each of our nights. You can expect to hear anything from Madonna to Hot Chip and baile funk. And I’m part of Cherise Got Loki - we’ll be playing a mix of electro and rocky tunes, whilst all the rest of the Girlcore crew will be jumping up and down in their French outfits.

What are your plans for future with Girlcore? Is world domination a possibility?

World domination is totally a possibility. It’s crazy how much press we have had in so little time (ELLE Magazine, Time Out, Diva, TheLondonPaper). Someone in Brazil even wrote an article about us! And we have just come back from Paris where we had been invited to be a team of the iPod Battle Paris vs London. It was great; the Parisians totally loved Girlcore.

And finally, what’s the Girlcore motto?

Girls just want to have fun!
