EXCLUSIVE Armand van Helden Interview

Armand van Helden finally returns to the UK on Easter Sunday 8th April for PUSH's 1st Birthday at the legendary KOKO in London, with a new album 'Ghettoblaster' to showcase. Those lovely guys at One Week To Live Magazine grabbed some words with this legend of house music and gave us a little tease of what he had to say!

This Easter dust down your dancing shoes as London’s No.1 Sunday session PUSH celebrates its 1st Birthday in fine fashion with a super-sized event at the uber-cool Koko club in Camden. Naturally this royal knees up will take place on a Sunday (Bank Holiday 8th April to be precise), and to make sure the night goes off with a bang, PUSH will be joining forces with Fatboy Slim’s hip label Southern Fried Records to bring on the party!!

With it being the big Birthday bash and all that, the PUSH team has pulled out their biggest party trick of all by securing the services of US legend Armand Van Helden exclusively on the night. In another major coup for PUSH, this gig will be Armand’s ONLY UK CLUB SHOW OF 2007 – giving the night an even greater sense of occasion and making it an essential event for his die-hard UK fans!!

Armand Van Helden is of course the Grammy Award Nominated DJ/Producer/Remixer from New York City. Over the years he’s produced multiple UK Top 40 hits including the No.1 smash 'U Don't Know Me', plus 'Koochy', ‘My My My’, 'Flowerz', 'Hear My Name', 'Why Can't You Free Some Time?', ‘Ultrafunkala’, 'Witch Doctor', and the all-time classic 'Funk Phenomena'. He’s released 5 artist albums – the most recent of which being ‘Nympho’, plus various mix compilations including ‘Live From Ya Mutha’s House’ and ‘New York: A Mix Odyssey’ (on Southern Fried Records). Like all good producers Armand has also given his golden touch to a wealth of megastar musicians such as Rolling Stones, P Diddy, Janet Jackson and Tori Amos – the latter of which he remixed her ‘Professional Widow’ track, which still remains to this day one of the biggest dance records of all time.

PUSH is the brainchild of the harder-beats-loving Heat and the 3 year old sell-out summer festival South West Four gang. PUSH was set up a year ago as an off-shoot to both brands, to mix up the finest in house and breaks on a smaller, more social scale. Housed fortnightly at the White House, Clapham, PUSH has had a phenomenal debut 12 months featuring an amazing array of talent from all of the world. Guests in 2006 included Rocky & Diesel (X-Press 2), James Zabiela, Nic Fanciulli, The Shapeshifters, Adam Freeland, Eddie Halliwell (House Set), Kid Kenobi, Fergie, Tall Paul, Krafy Kuts, Judge Jules (House Set), MYNC Project, Mike Monday and Tom Neville. Not bad huh? In addition, last summer PUSH flew a plane load of party people over to Ibiza for a week’s long rave up, before returning to Clapham and the Common this time, to co-host the Ibiza Tent at South West Four – where the likes of Smokin Jo, Tim Sheridan and Jo Mills hit the decks. Just before Christmas, PUSH also hosted their first ‘Warehouse Session’, with Eric Prydz, Mr C and Linus Love all rocking their sell-out Shoreditch soiree. With another action packed year ahead (including their debut party on the Piste at Snowbombing 2007), Koko represents the perfect home for PUSH for the evening and the perfect way to begin the new year.

With Armand at the controls, the Southern Fried Records crew will be also be calling upon the skills of two of their other heavyweight DJ/Producers - namely Touche and Cagedbaby. Former Boutique resident Touche has been affiliated with Southern Fried since day dot and remains one of the hottest spinners around. ‘The Paddle’ was a major hit for him off the label, and he’s followed that up with a monthly residency at the T-Bar, his own label – Body Clap and most recently a new live project, The Black Ghosts which features Damon Albarn on vocals on one of the tracks. Cagedbaby is another big player for Southern Fried and the Brighton boy has toured the globe showcasing his Will See You Now album to universal acclaim. The follow up LP is due to drop this summer, backed up by a series of live shows to support the album, but it’s as a DJ that Cagedbaby will entertain the Koko crowd – and, oh boy, what a DJ he is too!! Having smashed Turnmills apart on NYE alongside The Chemical Brothers, Cagedbaby is one of the very best and will undoubtedly pull out all the stops for PUSH’S Birthday. PUSH Resident Aaron Baskerville and Nathan Larkin also get their chance at this grand venue, with RPM and Marama Vs Dirty Funky Sexy hosting the other available rooms and continuing the house vibe.

Please note: Advance Tickets are already selling out fast!
