Interview with DJ/Producer: NICK BRIDGES (BODYROX)

This article is about UK's House Mafia @ KOKO in London (UK), Sat 20 Dec 2008

How do you feel to have been chosen to represent the UK, as one of the UK's house mafia at KOKO on the 20th December?
I have a lot of respect for both Seamus and Funkagenda who are also playing that night so it's nice to been 'grouped' with them.

This is the only dance music event at KOKO over Christmas, have you ever played there before? What do you think of the venue?

I love KoKo. It's one of the best venues in London now. Great sound system.

Tell us a little about how you started out in the house music industry?
I started like most DJs in the bedroom many years ago. I started promoting my own nights a few years later and was given my first big break playing at Ministry of Sound in 1998. I became resident there a few years later when i quit my day job to concentrate on DJing and producing. I had been producing about 4 years when Bodyrox charted.

What's been the most successful track you've produced or remixed?
'Yeah Yeah' reached no.2 in the UK and went top 10 in a number of countries. Our followup 'What Planet You On' reached no.1 in the Radio One Dance Chart and topped both Cool Cuts and the DMC Buzz Chart.

What artists have you collaborated with over the years and who have you learnt the most from?
I guess our collaborations with Luciana have been the most interesting. She is a brilliant writer and very versatile singer. We're currently working on an album together.

If you had to pick one area that you would work in, would it be DJing or producing?
I have been a DJ far longer than a producer so it would have to be DJing.

Have you got any special tracks or new releases you'll be playing for your fans on the 20th December?
Yeah, we have a new Bodyrox single called 'Brave New World' and you can also hear a number of my own remixes that are getting a lot of support right now from all the key players. You can check them out now at www.myspace.com/djnickbridges

What music do you listen to when not house?
I rarely listen to dance music outside of work. If i do listen to music it's usually Hip Hop and RnB.

DJing all over the world, has there been anywhere that really sticks out as somewhere you enjoy playing?
I play in Mauritius every year. It's an incredible island and the dance scene is growing rapidly. I've been playing there for about 7 years now and have recently had a DJ academy named after me over there.

What other challenges and goals have you set yourself for the years ahead?
We're hoping to take Bodyrox live when we finish the album. For the latest news, check out www.bodyrox.co.uk

And finally, what time are you playing at KOKO?
4:30-05:30
