Interview with DJ/Producer: GORDON EDGE

This article is about UK's House Mafia @ KOKO in London (UK), Sat 20 Dec 2008

How do you feel to have been chosen to represent the UK, as one of the UK's house mafia at KOKO on the 20th December?
Yes I'm excited about this night..So many of my gigs are outside UK so its great to be part of a big event like this in London

This is the only dance music event at KOKO over Christmas, have you ever played there before? What do you think of the venue?
I know it from when I first came to live in London ..was Camden Palace.. one of the resident djs used to play my test pressings so I could hear my 12" promos on Edge Records for first time on a big sound system...it's a great venue.. But this will be my 1st time to Dj there.

Tell us a little about how you started out in the house music industry?
I got inspired my visiting the early house clubs in New York.
I just wanted to start making house records & be part of what was going on + make records from a home studio…that's normal now but when I started most people hired studios and engineers etc..but my aim was to do every part of the record; produce.mix.engineer.run the record label etc..

You've produced under lots of different aliases, what are they and what have been your biggest tracks that people may not realise were you??
My first records were on white label 12" .. so I didn't even bother with artist name.. just "CUT*001" "XVX.1".. "EDGE*1" etc..
I was putting out too many records to even bother with getting labels printed! But EDGE*1[compnded]1992 just kept on selling so I got labels printed and track names
But a lot of my records had no names just the record number.
People might know :
"Itza Trumpet thing"[released in Ibiza 1998] or "Tremmora Del Terra.XVX.1" [hit in German clubs about 1995]
Or "Need You [right now]" [on many ambient / chill compilations] or 'Set Your body free' [Edge/Subliminal records 2004]

Have you got any tracks you'll be playing for your fans on the 20th December?
Im working on new track at the moment .. so I will be playing some unreleased new productions in my set.

What music do you listen to when not house?
Jazz trumpet...Miles Davis ..Freddie Hubbard..etc

DJing all over the world, has there been anywhere that really sticks out
as somewhere you enjoy playing?
It has to be Bora Bora in Ibiza.. Playing long sets.. 5 or 8 hrs is just incredible there.

What other challenges and goals have you set yourself for the years ahead?
I've had a 4year break from making records ..so now back into studio and aiming to get Edge Records running again and get more into actual song writing as well as production.

And finally, what time are you playing at KOKO?
12:30-01:30
