This article is about Frantic 12 @ KOKO in London (UK), Sun 30 Aug
From the humble beginnings of a party in a Chinese Restaurant in Soho to over 1000 parties in 10 different countries Frantic has been the pioneering UK brand for all Hard Music for the past 12 years! On Bank Holiday Sunday 30th August Frantic returns to one of their favorate venues, Koko, to celebrate 12 glorious years of everything hard! Mr Franitc, Will Paterson, has been successfully promoting events for over 12 years so Frantic’s Chloe gets an insight into the hardest working man in the scene and finds out what it takes to be the best and why the birthday events are so special!
What is a normal day for you (if there is such a thing in our world)?
Lol...yeah Mon to Fri I usually get up and start work by 9.30 and then work until around 9 or 10 and then have some food, read the paper and go to Bed! At the Weekend I’ll usually work all the way through as there is always a lot to do.
Why the name Frantic?
I wanted to get across the idea of a faster, more intense Hard House sound. At the time clubs traditionally played slower and more trancey for much of the night. I wanted to start fast and stay that way.
What kind of party did you have at 12 (I know it was like a centuary ago now)?
I would have been in Scotland with my Grandmother who was in her 80's so I think I would have gone out for lunch with my relations and then relaxed in the countryside! Its not for everyone, but I loved it.
Did you think that when you started Frantic back in '97 that it would ever be as successful as it is now?
No way. When I first started it was just about making the first event fun. I think after a year, when we started to fill out the 3000 capacity Bagleys in Kings Cross then I started to hope I could make Frantic go a longer way. Now after 90 Shows at Koko, 18 at Brixton Academy and 700 + other shows in 10 different countries I can hardly remember doing anything else!
What does it take to keep on top?
It takes dedication, a willingness to change, a desire for new challenges, great colleagues and a total love of the club scene. Oh and some luck!
What books are you reading at the moment?
I’ve just read Bernard Cromwell's 'Azincourt' which was stunning. Now I’m reading Emmanuel Litvinoff's, 'Journey through a small planet' which is a great memoir of life in the East End after WW2.
Do you think life will begin at 40?
Lol...I think it just might!
Aside from Hard House what other music or artists are floating your boat right now?
Loving Jump Up artists like Hazard, Logan D and Harry Shotta.
Was very impressed with Surgeon and have seen some great footage of Len Faki on a Techno tip.
And who can forget my continuing love affair with Bruce Springsteen and more alternative Country Acts like EmmyLou Harris and Lucinda Williams.
Will you ever take a holiday that doesn't include going to Scotland?
Not if I can help it...lol
You used to teach History, what is your favourite historical moment in Hard House or from the events you have held?
There have been loads of amazing moments in Hard House, but I’ve always loved either going to Trade or going to Sundissential North and now I love going to events like Westfest.
With Frantic I think any of the 90 events at Camden Palace / Koko were a dream come true for me. I just loved acts like Whitby and Farley smashing the place up or Phil Reynolds or BK or countless others who made being there a bigger buzz than I can put into words.
What are you most looking forward to at the 12th birthday?
Andy Whitby. The way he is playing now is just off the page. He mixes records so quickly and runs through so many different styles from Bounce to Filth to Euro Im determined to be there on the dancefloor when he goes on!
Also excited about acts like Technikal, Klubfilller, Farley and BK and Cally Gage and a long awaited return of Alex Kidd to the Main Room of Frantic. Oh yeah and who can forget Ms Pin Up, Steve Hill etc?!
Will you be in theme?
Yeah and its a naughty one! We are looking for people to be inspired by the Master & Servant theme of Proteus and Frisky's very, very special Back 2 Back. Think stockings and suspenders, think Pvc, think SEX!
