This article is about IBIZA UNDERGROUND Vs MIAMI MADNESS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL @ Mass in London (UK), Sat 15 Dec 2007
Tom thanks for taking the time to talk to us right lets crack on.
1) Seeing as it's Christmas and there was the ghost of Christmas future past and present what are your favorite tracks of the past present and future?
Well, as far as the past is concerned, there are so many. I have been listening to house music for a long time now, and there are countless tracks I love. If we are talking about my all time favourites, I would go for something from a few years ago, like ‘My Lexicon’ by Sander Kleinenberg, or ‘Dark and Long’ by Underworld. My favourite track from this year would probably be either ‘Pause’ by Will Saul, or Valentino Kanzyani’s amazing remix of ‘Outhouse’ by Nathan Fake.
My present favourite track would be a toss-up between Harvey Dawson’s remix of Timo Garcia’s ‘Magic Roundabout’ and the Kid Dub mix of ‘Cheese Dreams’ by Cozzy D. Both of those tracks have so much soul, and have so much clever, delicate rhythm. The production is amazing. The fact that they are both on Berwick Street Records is a testament to Timo’s label. And they are both on ‘Unsalted’ – my mix that you can download here.
The future…well, that’s more tricky, isn’t it. I think I will pick out a track by a couple of old soldiers who have been making music for many years – Pete Heller and Satoshi Tomiie. Their new track ‘Elevate’ has been remixed by Merkins, and it’s a dark, bassy growler that I expect to hear more and more on the afterparty scene.
2) what are your 3 biggest musical influences?
Well, another tricky question. I’m sure every DJ who you ask that question of would say ‘too many to count’ or something along those lines, and it’d be true. I think I’ll help my selection by restricting myself to one DJ, one producer and one club/night.
The DJ that has had the biggest influence on me has got to be Sasha. I was a massive Sasha fan, flying home from Spain once to see him play at Gatecrasher, and his musical vision, incredible set building and mixing skills have always been an inspiration to me.
There are so many producers that produce great music, but over the last 3 years, I think the one who has been so consistently excellent, on either his Mouseville, Pryda or Pryda Friends imprints is the unstoppable Eric Prydz. I don’t think anyone gets anywhere near him for the sheer quantity of his records I have in my bag.
Once again, there are so many clubs/nights that have shaped the way I listen to music, and I’m not going to go on about them all, but I think at the moment, the club that is influencing me most is Jaded at The End. They get some fantastic DJs/producers to play there, and avoid ‘big names’ for a more underground sound. And Raymundo Rodriguez is always spot on.
3) How did you get into House music?
When I was a teenager I was much more into bands, and it wasn’t until I started to listen to acts like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers that there was any electronic influence on my musical tastes. When I got to Uni, my tastes broadened, and I started to go out to ‘real’ clubs a little. I went to Birmingham University, and went to Gods Kitchen quite a bit when it opened, but it was when I went to Gatecrasher in 1999 that I started really clubbing properly. It was an amazing time at that club, and through a friend from school I made friends with a big group of mates. I used to go up to Sheffield from Birmingham most weekends and stay till Wednesday. It was from that background I quickly got into the progressive house scene and Sasha in particular.
After graduating I went to live in Paris for a few years, and didn’t really do much clubbing, so when I came back to the UK and moved to London at the end of the funky house scene a couple of years ago, I was hungry for going out. And from then on I have been heavily involved in the London scene, both as a clubber and as a DJ.
4) what 3 things could you not live without?
I will avoid the obvious DJ answers like ‘my record collection’ or my decks, but my mp3 player is really true – it goes everywhere with me.
The second thing would be sport on telly, generally. I am a terrible sports addict, and drive my girlfriend, Kim, crazy with my insatiable sports appetite at the weekend. I don’t play any sport though. I’m much too lazy for that.
Laziness is also a factor in number 3 – my bed. It’s so comfortable, I really struggle to get out of it in the mornings. The only solution at the weekend is not to get into it until it’s over, ha ha.
5) apart from playing for Ibiza underground whats been your biggest gig of the year and why?
In April, Spoilt Rotten were hosting the Baby Box at Ministry of Sound. I had played earlier at a venue with a shocking set-up and sound system, and playing in the Baby Box it felt like I had died and gone to heaven. The sound was so crisp, it really is a great little room. I played after Graeme Lloyd, and we had the room packed and buzzing right until it closed, in spite of the rest of the club being quite quiet. I was loving it.
6) how do you see the scene changing over the next year?
It’s hard to say really. It’s been quite a tough year for clubbing, especially with the smoking ban, and a lot of promoters have been struggling. Next year, the closure of the Goods Yard in Kings Cross is bound to have a big impact on the London scene, and it’ll be interesting to see which clubs are the winners from that shift in London clubbing’s axis of power. All I hope for is fresh, good new music, and at least a couple of people to play it to.
7) what do you want for Christmas? Good question, ha ha. There is a massive long list of ‘stuff’ that I want, but that’d be boring for anyone reading this. I think I’d probably ask for the willpower to go home at the weekend before my body gives up completely, or before my bank account is completely empty. That’d be nice.
8) and finally as you know its Charlie buckets leaving bash, what is your favourite bucket moment and do you have any advice for him on his travels? It would have to be one Sunday morning in Egg, I had taken my shoes off (don’t ask me why, I really don’t know), and everyone was complaining about the smell. An overreaction I reckon; they really weren’t that bad. Anyway, someone whipped out some foot deodorant and was busy spraying it all over my sock-clad feet, when Charlie, quick as a flash, pulled out a lighter and lit the spray, turning my feet into two large fireballs for a moment. With the weak state of my mind by that stage of the weekend, the shock was nearly too much for me to deal with. Never got him back for that, the bastard!!
My advice to him would be to always look out for an adams apple and man’s hands on the stunner he’s trying to chat up in that Thai nightclub.
ok quickfire questions
sprouts yes or no – Yes!! I love ‘em
Christmas pudding or mince pies – Mince pies, I can’t stand Christmas pudding
