MIAMI MADNESS INTERVIEW WITH D.DACOSTA

This article is about IBIZA UNDERGROUND Vs MIAMI MADNESS CHRISTMAS SPECIAL @ Mass in London, Sat 15 Dec 2007

Denz, cheers for taking the time to talk yo us..right lets crack on.

1)seeing as it's Christmas and there was the ghost of Christmas future past and present what are your favourite tracks of the past present and future?

what a brain doodler... um I would have to say that one my all time favourite tracks of the past would have be Electribe 101 "talking with myself" its an absolute classic in my eyes and something that just epitomise my first understandings of Ibiza from when my sister started going there in 89/90.

My current fave would have to be a track called "sex Weed" by laidback luke, I had to a do a little re-edit to to just rejig it a bit but basically its an afro/electro/house track that just crosses so many genres and could easily fit into a variety of different type of sets - definitely one to get ladies asses shaking!

my future track has to be Dennis Ferrer's "Black man in Space" if your looking for a track that is both Deep Techy and soulful this is the one! Dennis has the ability to make tunes that have a straight groove would fit in any Ibiza dance floor whilst holding its own in any new York house club much like "Sandcastle" or "Son of Raw" did.

2) what are your 3 biggest musical influences?

Firstly my biggest musical influences would have to be all that mowtown stuff that my mum and dad played - Diana Ross, Al Green, Otis Redding etc as it was constantly on in my house as child
Secondly, I would have to say my sister as she was the one that was involved in the House scene from the beginning - Ibiza, Club Ku, sweaty clubs, back combing, fluorescent Clothing (the first time round) smiley faces, Ebenezer Goode, funki dreds and pills when they were proper not the crap you get nowadays.
and thirdly I would have to say Grant nelson ever since I've been clubbing I've been dancing to tunes that he has made. he's a genius and has had the ability to have work as a prolific producer in several genres including Hardcore, Jungle/DnB, Garage and House whilst ensuring all his tunes are both melodic and bass driven. -

3) How did you get into House music?

This is one of those funny questions that is quite hard to answer, I had a love for house from a very young age but when you grow up you move with what everyone else does - that's why back in 95 everyone had Reebok classics and at the time I listened to jungle then garage or house n Garage as it was initially known. I then grew bored with listening to a non moving music and production that was either uninspiring or just straight off a playstation at which point I started to pick up a few bits of US house from "Neil Pierce" when he used work in "Release the Groove" and then I started to go out clubbing with my sister and her older friends and basically ever since then I've been back where I started with proper club music, everything is cyclical.

4) what 3 things could you not live without?

1)I cant live without my Music - its always there and my mixes are like my diary you can convey so much about how you feel through a tune and most times you do it subconsciously.

2) Food - I love my food and its quite a surprise I don't look like a two tonne tessie cos I eat all the crap that I shouldn't. yesterday I had a wicked carvery lunch with roast beef, Salmon, Chicken wings, Rice roast parsnips, roast tatoes, boiled tatoes, gravy - no veg and topped that off with a Double chocolate gateaux slice with cream - I nearly keeled over with respiratory problems last night and now the missus has me on a supposed "Healthy" diet.... yeah right!

3) Gotta say my Family and my Gelf - They all keep me on the straight and narrow!

5) apart from playing for Ibiza underground what's been your biggest gig of the year and why?

Biggest gig... there have been a good few parties that I've played at this year for which I'm very thankful but the biggest one would have to Club Zinc in Dubai, Flew out there with a fellow Dj and my Girlfriend, got picked up from the airport, stayed in a luxurious hotel, played a 2 hour set, sunbathed in 40 degree heat and then flew home to come and party at the Dirty angels first Mansion Party! quality!

6) how do you see the scene changing over the next year?

Hopefully more Promoters, promoting and booking Dj's cos they can play and not cos they charge their 10 best mates to come out.
I see the scene getting more vocal - Tech doesn't have to mean no songs.

7) what do you want for Christmas?

Some bad boy KRK6 Powered monitors and a psp in time for Pro 8 oh and 2 Christmas dinners

8) and finally as you know its Charlie buckets leaving bash, what is your favourite bucket moment and do you have any advice for him on his travels?

Bucket is one of the coolest people that I've met, he's got a swagger to him and you don't get that in a lot of people nowadays. my advice is be you, you'll only ever be a second rate someone else.

ok quick fire questions

sprouts yes or no -

depends whether its gonna take away from the space that I would use to have more meat on my plate - mostly no...
Christmas pudding or mince pies

- both aren't that nice - puddings have alcohol I believe so probably that one.
festive bond films good or bad
- love em.... especially O.H.M.S.S - Not a famous bond but one of those ones with a surprisingly good story..
afterpartys good or bad? Good - love an after party, just don't like the Monday after the after party!
