This article is about IBIZA UNDERGROUND Vs MIAMI MADNESS @ Mass in London (UK), Sat 17 Nov 2007
Hi fella's thanks for taking the time out to speak to us,
How did you first get into house music and who were your heroes in the early days??
Dance music in general became a part of our lives from an early age (Danny- Scouse house and myself trance), when we hit University became mates and found the joint sounds of house-music. For the last 8 years we have been passionate about house and have built our reputation on driving bass-lines. Early influences have to be Mr Rampling, Morillo and Graeme Park (who smashed the Hacienda to pieces).
Talking of early days can you tell me where you got your name from and how you guys first met?
As we said University was where we first began to get into mischief, and since then we have been lucky enough to be taken all over England, to Faliraki (not so glamorous any more but at 19 oh yea!), then in recent years breaking into Ibiza and across the border into Scotland. In other words we’ve been close friends for years and have really benefited some quality experiences which has enable us to develop our music and the blend name. Anyway, ramble over Blend became 1 in the early years, as we looked to build a strong brand. Bearing in mind the different musical influences we had to make sure our sets were strong, delivered a clear message and worked for the crowd – no other way to do it but to make sure it was a blend.
What tune has been in you box all summer?
Aaaaaaah… this one always gets us in trouble – its called ‘track 4’, seriously we do not know what it is called it’s the first track on our new Ibiza Underground mix though.
If you could only play out one more time “what club would it be & why?”
Probably Space terrace, amazing ! Been lucky to play across the best clubs in the UK through our residencies, but there are not many places like the terrace. DA at Space in 2008 anybody ??
Seeing you’re heading the bill alongside Jonathan Ulysses and Aaron-le-Doubles what other DJ’s would you like to see yourself headline alongside?
Hard one as we have played on the same billing alongside some legends of house music (check our website www.blend-djs.com if you have chance – aaaah the bliss of self promo), coming on straight after Jon will be great on the 17th, and if we used coming straight after the DJ as the benchmark I would have to say either Fatboy Slim or Sasha – we like to be diverse and either of those two would pose a real challenge, and one we would truly love.
Who are your top 3 DJ’S/Producers at the moment?
Stealth continues to be a really strong label production and artists (Sanchez, Laidback Luke etc..), the most striking recent set has to be Trentmoller from when we were at Tribal Sessions in Leeds. One name you may not know but doesn’t disappoint is Mario Ochoa – you tend to find him cropping up in our sets every couple of months…
What’s your favourite tune of all time?
Probably the original progressive house mix of Alanis morisette – Uninvited. Though we didn’t actually know what it was called until the freemasons b*stardized it. Also, a University favourite was always Jonestown – Sweet Thang (massive in Birmingham), one party we played it every hour on the hour – the party went on for 20 hours….
Apart from the last Ibiza Underground what was the best night you’ve had out?
Nice DA self plug !! no on a serious note Ibiza Underground in October was a lot of fun – great concept for London bearing in mind how expensive drinks etc can be, but add in top line acts for a bargain price you are onto a winner. Best night in the last 12 months is a good one, from a playing angle we would have to say the RPM Christmas party @ Turnmills last December we had T3 and by 4am the rest of the club was empty and they closed the main room (sorry Grant Nelson!!) being asked to go back on for an extra 1 hr 30 mins until 7am was a high! From a sheer partying aspect would have to say Cream at Amnesia has left a mark on both of us, we don’t remember much apart from being blown away by everything from the venue, the crowd and the atmosphere. Though who knows with 3 Dirty Angels parties in 3 days – we could have a contender !!
What 3 things could you not live without?
Women, ladies and food (well can go for a few days without one).
Tells us something about the blends we don’t already know?
Blend used to be 3 until about 18 months ago when Beneecha Brown (Esq.) decided to fly the nest to travel the world, last we heard he was in the middle of a jungle chasing urangutans? (Always worried about that boy!!)
OK before you go quick fire questions
Marmite or Vegemite?
Marmite is minging, vegemite is a swear word .. Next !
Brown or red sauce? Love both
Curry or Chinese?
Chinese has more variety (though we do have a few tales about curry ! – have a search on youtube)
Blonde or Brunette?
See answer to three things we can’t live without
Afterpartys good or bad?
Absolutely love them on the following conditions; (a) the music is still big uplifting tunes there can be a tendency to go too dark (when it’s turning light outside). (b) the crowd can still drink, water only seems to lead to people getting toooo smashed (c) you have control of the venue and don’t have a pushy owner wanting to close early because they are f**ked when the place is still buzzing! Woudn’t it be nice if we had somewhere to go after Mass (………………over to the promoters!!!)
