This article is about Riot! @ matter in London (UK), Fri 24 Jul
1. How and where did you two first meet each other? When did you become ‘The Tidy Boys’?
We met back in 1990 during our early years as Megamixers at the Music Factory, we created DJ only mixes for the Mastermix DJ subscription service. He was also working as Jive Bunny producer at the time and I was working on the Hit The Decks album projects. We forged a great friendship both in and out of the studio and became best mates. We set up Tidy Trax in 1995 and it wasn't till March 1999 we started DJing as a duo. (we had both previously been DJs separately before). We originally were called the Untidy DJs after the success we had with the untidy Dubs - it was not till the summer of 99 we became the Tidy Boys
2. You are playing the mighty Riot! At matter on July 24th. This is going to be your only London performance of 2009, why is this and have you got something special planned for the Riot massive?
We never like to plan stuff and like to be live and spontaneous, however we are always trying out new intros and samples sequences, as well as dropping the odd forgotten classic.
3. Riot is the first hard dance club night to take over superclub matter – do you think the scene is experiencing an influx of supporters of late? How healthy would you say the scene is at present?
The scene has took a dip for many reasons - but its not just hard dance, every promoter in every style of music is having to work twice as hard to get people through the door. I think we are on the brink of the scene going back underground and the next Trade, Riot or Sundissential is about to be born - more new nights are healthy for the business, and the smaller clubs with less risk seem to be doing the best at the moment, however established night and promoters such as Riot are good at what they do and can weather any recession storm.
4. Also on the line up is Lisa Pin Up and Anne Savage – are you looking forward to playing with the Tidy Girls? Any funny stories about the pair to tell us?
Its always fun playing with the Tidy Girls, especially Lisa and Anne. The funniest thing with Anne was on Tidy TV, she had to stick 6 colour felt tip pens into a half opened tin of corned beef and then balance it on her left shoulder
5. What current track do you have in your music collection that is guaranteed to kick off any party?
Old Classic: Til Tears Do Us Part by Heavens Cry - New track: Carl Nicholso'sn version of Pearl River
6. What track in your music collection would we be surprised to see?
I think the fact I have 9 Test Card Music albums may shock many.
7. Are you vinyl / CDs / digital people – how has technology affected your DJing and production since you started out?
Started off with vinyl which you cannot beat the lush warm sound of analogue, CDs we were one of the first to play out on mainly CDs back in late 1999, and they are more practical than vinyl of course. We don't play MP3 as the sound quality of even a 320K is shite, so we stick to wav files only on CDRs. Laptop mixing is OK if a little dull to watch.
8. Any new productions coming up /studio time planned?
We are so busy with our own businesses at the moment its hard getting back in the studio, we have semi-retired as DJs and now 100% involved in Education software for vocational learning. I'm (Amadeus) currently working on a Loungecore Chill album which has 3 tracks complete.
9. If you were to start a Riot, what would be the reason behind it and how would you demonstrate / ask to riot with you?
We are not big fans of riots in general and prefer a more subtle approach to problems and solutions - i.e talk it through before setting fire to buildings.
10. What have you got coming up over the next few months? Any messages to Riot fans?
In the next few months we slip even further into our retirement and only playing selected gigs - however we are enjoying playing in Ibiza at the Atomik parties at Boho every Wednesday and we are very excited about Atomik 2 Weekender in November. Our message to Riot fans would be - 'please dance to some of the records we play'.
