Interview: Sneaky Sound System

Hi guys how you and what are you up to right now?

Feeling pretty good considering we’ve just flown into London from Sydney – we got lucky and scored an upgrade to First Class. Now we’re off to Ibiza to play the closing parties at Space and Pacha...good times await!

For those who don't know who you are how would you describe what you do?

We have been putting on cub nights for nearly 10 years in Australia and started making our own music about 5 years ago. Miss Connie is our wonderful singer and I guess I (Black Angus) am the the music dude. We collaborate a lot with a chap called Donnie Sloan and the three of us play banging electronic pop music that people dance there arse off to. Its party, with a hint of melancholy.

How did you all meet?

Very randomly. I met Connie when (former member) MC Double D and I were strolling through a park. She was singing like an angel and we couldn’t help but introduce ourselves. I sang her a new song I’d just written, rather clumsily, and she liked it. The next week we recorded it and we’ve been hanging out ever since.

What are your musical influences?

And how do you go about writing new material? We’re both children of 80’s music – Eurythmics, New Order, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Grace Jones etc - so that has an omnipresent undertone to everything we do. Connie is more from a live band background and is obsessed with music from yesteryear. I dig that stuff as well but I’ve been a DJ for a long time so am more in tune with what’s happening in the clubs – Italo disco, Detroit techno, house music, all sorts of stuff. So I guess we aim to merge new sounds and ideas with classic song writing. With the new material, we’re trying to allow a lot more room for experimentation and collaboration, to see where that might lead us.

Your massive in Australia, how are you finding the UK takeover?

Its been a great summer playing at so many festivals throughout the UK and doing our first season in Ibiza. It all keeps building with each show and we’re really enjoying it. There seems to be a vibe out there and word is spreading, but I wouldn’t call it a takeover just yet.

What are you currently listening to?

I’ve been putting together a mix CD called You Only Live Once, so I am listening to heaps of techno and house music – over and over and over again. Connie is listening to the unedited Blade Runner soundtrack...all six hours of it.

What’s next on your busy schedule?

Ibeeeefa!!!! Closing party mayhem, then we have a handful of shows in the UK including this super duper 3D disco do at Matter. Then we hit the studio for a few weeks before heading home for the Australian summer.

Can we expect to hear any unreleased tracks at your Mixmag & Matter performance?

Sure thing. We’ve got a few reworks of some older tracks plus a couple of new ones we want to test out. Its our first time at Matter and our first time playing a 3D party, so don’t quite know what to expect...and we like that.
