Rare interview: MICHAEL GRAY starts "The Weekend" bank holiday this Friday with a most intimate gig

One of the most recognised dj artists in the industry, MICHAEL GRAY will usher in the bank holiday weekend with an exclusive set this Friday with Remedy @ Medicine (Shoreditch). We talk to the big man himself ahead of the intimate party for our chosen charity Cancer Research, feat. MICHAEL GRAY & Pukka Up frontman SCOTT GILES.

How are things going recently?

Really good thanks, i have just been on holiday, moved house and studio so its hectic!
Also, i have just returned from Ibiza a little jaded!

You're as prolific a producer as you are dj, which one do you prefer?
That's a hard question, but producing and writing gives me a more long term buzz.

What got you started in music and djing?
My love for music started at the age of 6, by 12 i was DJing every other week at an under 16's disco my Dad ran. Clubs followed at 17 then making records at about 24.

Throughout the average week what's Michael Gray's schedule like?
There is never enough days in the week, but normally i work in the studio Monday to Friday producing or writing new tracks, and choose to DJ 2 gigs a month on average.
On Fridays i normally go through all the new tracks that have been sent to me which takes ages! All my spare time is taken up with my family and going to clubs socially, seeing new bands play or hanging out with my friends.

You usually play at the biggest clubs around the world, we love bring exceptional djs to smaller venues where they can play to an intimate crowd. What attracted you to the idea?

I love playing to large and small crowds, but i find i can be more diverse in smaller venues.

How have things progressed in your style over the years and where do you see the future of dance music?
I think production techniques have seriously progressed over the years, though maybe not songs of anthemic quality. They are around but not as many than say of 5 or 10 years ago.
Electro and electronica has given house a good kick up the arse and brought through some seriously talented producers.

Throughout your time as an exceptional artist you've released great music, played amazing sets and had tremendous commercial success. What's the magic formula to it all?
Thanks. I think just believing 100% in what you do even when its not the 'norm', but at the same time always embracing new music styles into your productions.

Any upcoming productions on the horizon?
Yes, my debut album coming soon on Eye Industries called "Analog is on", 5 new tracks for Luciana's forth coming album on Island. A sydenim under the name of Robot man "Ready for this" forthcoming on Neon Wave/Phonetic. I have produced a track for Koolwah called "Fashion" (Toolroomrecords) and collaborated with Richard Dinsdale as MGRD also forthcoming on Toolroom. I'm also about to go in the studio with Dirty South, Mark Knight, Joey Negro....

Sounds fantastic. What sort of set can we look forward to on the night?
Good thumping house from Electro to French to vocal

Thanks for having us here Michael, let the weekend come!
