23/08/08: Hi-Tek Soul/Nuestra Casa @ Ministry of Sound Bank Holiday Special: Derrick May/Stacey Pullen/Jim Masters/Rolando/Ken Ishii/Nuestra Casa

After the success of Nuestra Casa in the Baby Box at Ministry of Sound back in May, we are really pleased to have been invited back for Hi-Tek Soul's huge Bank Holiday special on Saturday 23rd August. This time we will be tearing up the Lounge alongside an astonishing DJ line-up in the main room and bar. So come along for some Bank Holiday Saturday house and techno loveliness :-)

The headliner in the main room needs absolutely no introduction – it's Hi-Tek Soul's head honcho and techno legend DERRICK MAY! Derrick is one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno, a precursor of its many variants and particularly of acid house. His aesthetic, skeletal, melancholy style gained him the nickname of "the Miles Davis of techno". Inspired by the legendary Detroit disco DJ, Ken Collier, May, along with High School friend Juan Atkins, formed Deep Space, a DJ and party outfit in the early eighties. Playing what they termed as 'conceptual disco' to the high school party scene that was very much alive in Detroit at the time, the duo set themselves apart from the other DJ and party collectives. Whilst DJing with Atkins, May spent time visiting his mother in Chicago, where he was exposed to the emerging house music scene that was being championed by the likes of Frankie Knuckles and Farley Jackmaster Funk. His experiences in Chicago opened his eyes wider to the growing possibilities of electronic music and the euphoria and spirituality it was capable of creating.

Derrick explains: "At Hi Tek Soul parties I choose people who truly believe in what they do and are not prejudiced against any music that has soul." It goes without saying when Derrick takes to the decks the only place to be is slap bang in the middle of the dance floor!

Headlining the Bar will be Detroit legend Stacey Pullen. Pullen is acknowledged as a pillar of the second wave of Detroit techno alongside the likes of Carl Craig and Underground Resistance, but perhaps he’s a little more tech house than his contemporaries. His DJ philosophy? "I don't really classify music," says Pullen. "I didn't even know electro was electro until someone told me. I enjoy music for what it is. In clubs a lot of people ask ‘What are you gonna play tonight?" and I never know. I just play from the heart. It's house, techno, broken beat or whatever: if the vibe is right I do it."

In the Lounge, Nuestra Casa will bring their usual blend of underground house and dancefloor bombs from all the usual suspects. Getting the party started we have Nuestra Casa co-founders BroKen DJs warming you up with their blend of housey grooves and dancefloor movers.

Then we welcome back firm Nuestra favourites Rob Newton and Jody Carter who will be dropping the best in deep, funky and tech house sounds.

This month we also welcome an up and coming DJ in the form Danny Stamp. Danny is another exciting young talent performing his sets on Ableton live. Danny's eclectic style is always well put together and his infectious enthusiasm is portrayed with his intelligent house sets.

We are also really pleased to welcome Nuestra debutantes and rising stars 2's Company. Robin L.E.O Tabor and JJ Levack are London born DJs & Producers with 20 years DJing experience between them. The lads have played modern electronic tech house music with soul all over London and UK and across Europe at infamous clubs such as Turnmills, Pacha, 333, The Key and Plan B. Their productions have also been causing a huge stir all over clubland, with their recent remix of DKS's “Lick My Synth” firmly in the boxes of the likes of James Zabiela and Nic Fancuilli!

Finishing you off in the early hours of the morning are our second dynamic duo Oliver James & Cosmique. They’ll be delivering lush slabs of ‘disco-progressive’ house until you’re feet can move no more and it’s time to brave the daylight outside!
