This article is about Ministry of Sound in London
The Explosion of 2010 has seen their profile grow tenfold with an eagerly awaited release on Misspelt Records with the remix of Vegas Baby - I Cant Help Myself and the hot new single on Big In Ibiza “The Morning Session” which has already been championed by Space resident and King of the Terrace, Jonathan Ulysses on his new Ibiza Opening Party 2010 compilation.
The So Called Scumbags Consist of James Edwards & David Minns. Forming in 2008 the duo immediately began causing havoc at London’s top venues with bookings flying in from all over London's club scene. This saw them play their unique DJ sets at Union in Fabric, Gallery at The Ministry Of Sound, The SE1, White House in Clapham, Corsica Studios & Egg.
We caught up with them for more....

So Called Scumbags
Where do you get your name?
James: Racking my brain on weekly road trips to Canterbury playing student parties. The driver always called me a Scumbag because I wore a hood. It came up in conversation between me and Dave and we both agreed that I may have looked like a Scumbag, but I wasn't actually a Scumbag..... So Called Scumbags were born.
How did you two hook up?
David: James and I met at Inigo in Clapham. I was the venue promotions manager and James was a promoter and DJ there. I heard James DJ and immediately invited him to come to Ibiza with my brand Read The Crowd. We straight away realised we had loads in common, we’d even had events up against each other years before in Clapham and never realised it. We certainly make a better team than competition.
James: Dave was the man who gave me my first gig in Ibiza! I had been going since the age of 14. He was very generous like that and I immediately knew he was a top guy. He was playing some of my tunes so I invited him over to do a studio session.
How did you get into production?
David: I moved to London in 1993 to study sound engineering and production techniques and subsequently worked for Matrix and Sarm Studios in London between 1994 and 1996.
James: I needed a way to enhance my DJ career so I did a fast track collage course in music Production. That gave me the basics and from then on it was all about collaborating and learning off others. Swapping Plug ins and getting stuck into magazines, anything I could do to make my bassline fatter and my kick drum punchier!
Who does what in the studio/when DJing – do you have specific roles?
David: I’d say James is the special effects man when it comes to DJ’ing and certainly knows the looping functions on CDJ’s inside out. Where as I have the old skool skills and cuts from learning the wheels of steel back in 1990.
James: We have a great balance. Dave is old... really old, he learnt his trade on vinyl cutting in with cross faders and scratching. I did start Dj'ing on Vinyl but soon moved on to digital formats, which I felt gave me a new dimension. Accapellas, loops, delay's, gates, I love it all. We incorporate the two styles in our sets and productions and it works really well.
Describe one of your records/DJ sets for people who don’t know…
David: Our records have a unique sound and compliment the style of sets that we play; they also feature 3 generations of music since we took on Professor Stretch in the studio. Our DJ sets are like Popeye on spinach.
James: Explosive energy and a subtastic groove. for me a DJ set is as much of a performance as singing or acting. We like people in the crowd to feed off our energy.
And what are your influences?
David: Rave music and the DJ’s that grew up with it. Sasha, Carl Cox, Colin Dale, Richie Hawtin and to name some more recent influences; Trentemoller, David Penn, Kaiserdisco and Juan Kidd.
James: My first real influence was watching Erick Morillo at Pacha in Ibiza. The Music and the performance were like nothing I had ever seen before and it made me want to do it. My musical influences now change week in week out as I hear so many great new tracks every day. I love Kaiserdisco at the moment and David Penn's bass lines are soooo good!
How has your year been? What have been your proudest moments this year?
David: Like the first year with James. Never a dull day and always building momentum day-by-day, week-by-week. Highlight this year has to be So Called Scumbags playing Bora Bora beach as the party was in full swing.
James: This year has been great. We have made good progress and are still enjoying it, which is the fundamental aspect. There have been plenty of highlights this year like playing Tiesto in victoria Park & Bora Bora. My favorite set was in the Ibizan Heat Boat Party. Absolutely amazing vibe. Check the video out on youtube.
What was it like playing at the DJMag Top 100?
David: Ask me again in 48hrs hehe.
James: Blurry.... Free Bar.
What have you got coming up?
David: A new remix of M-People’s classic ‘How can I love you more’ on Deconstruction Records
James: We are remixing a new track for Seb Fontaine & Julian Peak under their Reflekt outfit. Their classic 'I Need To Feel Loved' is one of my all time favorites so it's really exciting to be involved in one of their projects.
