This article is about LOVE-TEC (feat MUZZ's BIRTHDAY PARTY!!) @ Pacha in London (UK), Fri 21 Sep 2007
KISS FM's fantabulous floorfiller and teacher of KISStory, Steve Smart, takes a break from being 'ON AIR' and talks to us about his forthcoming appearance for Love-tec at Pacha on Friday.
What did you do to celebrate your last birthday?
I never really make a big thing of my birthday. But this year, I did and invited a load of friends along to a great little club in Knightsbrige called the Wellington. It was a great night actually - lots of my DJ mates and producers alike turned up!
When was that?
The 6th of March.
And, how young does that make you?!?!
31 - (see wrinkles, below!!!)
What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?
Whilst I was on a DJ tour in Russia, I was asked after my set to go up a 10-metre climbing wall and then zip slide over the top of a packed dancefloor. It was all legit and set up properly but was just weird! I don’t think health and safety would allow it in the UK!
What's the best night out you've ever had?
There really has been so many. I couldn't possibly choose one. Sorry!
What's the worst gig you ever had?
I guess we have all had a nightmare gig at some point – maybe in my early days. I remember when I was just starting out and I played a club in the early 90’s. It was in full swing and I was rocking it after 15 minutes into my set and the club got raided by police. I had to stop the music. Not a good look in front of 1000 people absolutely loving it.
What's your favourite record of all time?
Future Sound Of London – Papua New Guinea.
What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?
Probably today – I have just got back from watching Spurs lose to Arsenal after a week of telling everyone we'd do 'em this time!
What can't you live without?
Meeting lovely girls!!!
Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you ever had?
I've always made sure I've enjoyed my jobs - but I once trained as a boat-builder. Which was a bit odd at the time, but I liked it.
When was your first Kiss???
When I was about 14, I think
Who was it with?
A girl called Donna (My first-ever girlfriend).
What was the last record you bought?
Physically, it was Ulrich Schnauss' new album and, digitally, on the download it was Adam K – Twilight.
Who are your musical influences?
I've got so many but, as a DJ, it has to be Sasha. I grew up admiring his work and the fact he has always been ahead of the game.
What's the 'Smartest' thing you've ever done?
Probably moving to London!!!
Is there anything unusual about you that we should know?
No, not that I know of....
If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?
Just back to the late 50’s and early 60’s and live through the music evolvement.
What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box and refuse to leave?
I always carry around classics, but I guess to name a few: Mory Kante - 'Yeke Yeke', Future Sound Of London - 'Papua New Guinea' and A Guy Called Gerald - 'Voodoo Ray'.
And finally, what can we expect from you during your set at Pacha?
Let's just say it's going to go off in there – it's a great venue with beautiful attention-to-detail and Love-tec seem to know how to put on a great party.
Thanks, Steve. I look forward to seeing what you dish up at Pacha and also, on a personal note, celebrating my birthday with you. Now finally, ending in the tradition of Love-tec, let's hope YOU get 'kissed' by a stranger this weekend.....(!)
