Interview with Grand Central's Sam King

This article is about Twisted Disoc - The Return @ Pacha in London (UK), Fri 25 Apr 2008

After such an amazing public response and a roadblocked farewell party The Twisted Disco is back and this time we’re not taking any prisoners! WE caught up with DJ Sam King of Grand Central to find out abit about the DJ himself and what he has been up to.......

Tell us what’s new in the world of Sam King?

A new found love of laptop DJing and Flight of the Conchords, hooked on that at the moment, i think I’ve picked up a slight Kiwi accent from it too.

Your playing at Twisted Disco on 25th April with the likes of Jerome Sydenham and Jonty Skufff, what sets your style apart from them?

I seem to have taken to a style used by some of the more electro DJs you see around at the moment. Looping and pitch bending on the laptop etc.

What’s your favourite track at the moment ?

Rene Brehtbarth – Le Rythme Korg (Original Mix)

Tell us a bit about Grand Central?

Grand Central was started in May 2007 when five like-minded friends decided to bring a quality party, with 'non-mainstream' house and techno music talent to Bournemouth on the south coast.

Grand Central has seen many guests over the year so far, from the likes of Tim Sheridan (VVWI), James Priestley (Secretsundaze,), James Mowbray (Four Twenty) and Geddes (Mulletover).

What do you think of the UK scene at the moment?

Brilliant! It’s not often you find yourself with nothing to do on a weekend anymore, Bournemouth in particular has been making some really big moves over the last couple of years to ditch the student town reputation with all kinds of house, electro & techno nights popping up around town.

If you could only play one more club ever, what club would it be and what other DJs would be playing?

Crikey, i couldn’t say which club it would be but it would probably be with Miss Kittin, Her sets never fail to impress me.

Your quite new to the scene but are already making a huge impact. What got you interested in dance music ?

Family, my brother got me into DJing but my first encounter with electronic music was when i was about nine years old and my Dad made me listen to Jean Michel Jarre – Oxygene II in some massive headphones. Thats where it all started for me.

What do you prefer (producing or DJ``ing)?

DJing. Production is on the cards but i haven’t yet dabbled in it.

What do you like to do away from dance music?

Music wise I am constantly on the hunt for new tracks from any genre, I’m big on 60’s & 70’s Psych-Rock at the moment, Captain Beefheart & 13th Floor Elevators to name a couple. Also busy maintaining my Facebook music group ‘Dirty Music Hoes!’ check us out.

What have you got coming up in the future?

If only i knew! Hopefully plenty more gigs im just taking things as they come at the moment.

What can we expect from you and at Twisted Disco?

I’ve been digging deep this week you will just have to wait and see really!

What your latest top ten chart ?

1. Kissogram – My friend is a Seahorse (James Priestley & Dan Berkson Remix)
2. Itamar Sagi – Black Gold (Samuel L Session mix)
3. Puzique – Don’t Go
