Interview with Sy Sez

This article is about You Got Soul @ Pacha in London (UK), Sat 16 Aug 2008

Sy Sez is a London DJ whos journey began playing on many of Londons pirate radio stations. Along with his radio shows he began playing at local house & warehouse parties, since then he has graced many of Londons best club venues including Ministry of Sound, Turnmills, Pacha, Neighbourhood, Herbal, The Key, KOKO, Canvas, SE1, Plan-B, The Whitehouse - aswell as other clubs in UK cities such as Bristol, Nottingham, Exeter, Bournemouth, Southampton and Newquay. Since then he has also travelled to Ibiza, Southern Spain and Ireland to showcase his talent.

In 2005 Sy Sez caught the eye of infamous house-music duo ‘The Fanatix’ (Aaron Ross & Neil Pierce) and earned him a place on their monthly residencies at top London venue – Neighbourhood. This notorious residency was a very popular night and created a dedicated following and has now been moved to Herbal - where he continues to be their resident. Due to his continued hardwork, dedication and talent - Sy has now been proudly welcomed into the Fanatix as their official 3rd member and to begin joining them in the studio on their productions.

More recently his DJ skills have earned him a place on the Soul-Heaven lineup on its return to the Ministry of Sound featuring Terry Hunter & Terissa Griffin and also a repeat booking at Soul Heaven for Tony Humphries 50th Birthday.....aswell as a booking from soulful house heavyweights Bobby & Steve playing at their famous club night GARAGE CITY (a true soulful house institution) also Sy holds a brand new residency for Kinky Malinki playing in their deep & soulful house room.

Remember this cats name, he's one of the U.K's rising young talents. With his unique style of Deep, Soulful, Gospel Afro-Beat and Latin house - he has a serious love for the music he plays, and his passion shines through in any of the sets you will hear him play.

We caught up with him before his gig for You Got Soul at Pacha alongside Fanatix......

Tell us what’s new in the world of Sy Sez?

More recently I have been in the studio with my newly formed production outfit AphroDisiax working on different material. Mainly remix work.

What have you been up to recently in UK and further a field?

Still busy with DJ gigs up and down UK – just got back from playing @ the Soul Village weekender down by the sea which was nice.

You’re set to play alongside Fanatix at Pacha on August 16th. What can we expect?

You can expect our own brand of deep n soulful house with energy! Not a lot of people associate our style of music with that “main room” sound so will be good to get on that new Pacha system and work the crowd.

What do you think of the UK scene at the moment?

The UK scene at the moment, for me, is kind of in an indecisive period. There’s a lot of new forms / sub genres of house music un-folding and DJs and clubbers alike are definitely testing the new waters. Which is a good thing for sure?

Your resident for Soul Heaven, Tell us a bit about Soul Heaven

Soul Heaven is one of the flagship nights for soulful house music in the world! All of the big name heavy-weight DJs and producers have featured on the line-ups all over the world and also at our London residencies too. It’s an honour for me to be a resident now and join the list of UK resident DJ’s who I looked up to a lot over the years such as – Phil Asher. Neil Pierce, Andy Ward, Rupert + Aaron Ross – that’s a hell of a resident’s line-up!

What’s your favourite track at the moment?

Kenphonik – Sunday Showers

What’s your favourite club to play in (and why)?

Probably HERBAL where we hold our Fanatix club-night on the last Saturday of every month! Simply because it’s intimate so as a DJ u can seriously vibe with the crowd and also the system in main room is thumpin !!

If you could only play one more club ever, what club would it be and what other DJs would be playing?

I would have to say in the Powerhouse @ the world famous Southport Weekender…
Other DJs playing would have to be : Masters @ Work, Osunlade, Spen, Fanatix, Roy Davis Jnr. + Phil Asher

What got you interested in dance music ?

Probably the film break-dance ! I always wanted to be a DJ and grew up in and out of record shops and raves ! This got me hooked on dance music !

What do you prefer (producing or DJ``ing)?

That’s a hard one ! Has to be Dj-ing though as that is my first love !

What do you like to do away from dance music?

Sleep !

What have you got coming up in the future?

More Soul Heaven gigs + Fanatix parties around UK plus a lot more from my production outfit – AphroDisiax which is me Gavin Peters + Jamie Funk. Watch out for the name as we’ve got a few releases and gigs coming soon…..

What your latest top five chart ?

1 Kenphonik – Sunday Showers
2 CERAMIC - Broken Dreams (AphroDisax mix)
3 Fanatix ft. Sara Devine – Call On Me
4 Omar + Steve Wonder – Feelin You (Henrik Schwarz mix)
5 Groove Armada ft. Angie Stone – Feel The Same (Muthafunkaz mix)
