This article is about Club Azuli with X-PRESS 2, GLENN MORRISON + more @ Pacha in London (UK), Sat 12 Jul 2008
You're from Toronto, the same city where deadmau5 is from, do you know him, and what is it about this city and a new wave of producers? Whats the music scene like there?
Yes I know Joel very well, him and I were quite close last year, and made some fantastic records. I wouldn’t say that Toronto has a thriving music scene persay, a bunch of us just happen to be living here! Haha. It’s a fantastic city all the same, not to mention the fact that we have one of the best clubs in the world here, The Guvernment.
Progressive house seems to be on the up again, do you think the genre is going through some kind of renaissance?
In a way yes, I think there has been a rather large resurgence of big prog numbers coming into the scene as of late. All genres go through a kind of renaissance, it needs to happen to allow for a fresh approach and outlook on things. Even the word ‘trance’ is becoming synonymous with progressive these days. Some of the best stuff really incorporates a number of genres I feel. I love it when the lines are crossed and things aren’t so black and white if you know what I mean?
Are you looking forward to playing in London? Is it the first time you have played in the city?
I’m really looking forward to playing at Pacha for the Azuli night. Azuli has always been one of my favorite labels, and growing up I used to listen to the ‘Choices’ album series. It’s been very inspirational for me, so on a personal level I can’t wait to play there. This is the second time I’ve played in London, as I played at Turnmills a couple years ago.
You're playing in Ibiza a few times this summer, what do you make of the island?
I’ve never been to the island before! Haha. This will be an unbelievable experience for me, having this residency at the Amnesia club (“Tuesday at Amnesia”). I can’t wait. It’s a surreal feeling that everything has grown to this point, and if you asked me what I was going to do in the future 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have even thought close to this!
Are you one of the new school djs using laptop and programs like Traktor or Serato or is it cds and vinyl?
To be quite honest with you, I really hate those laptop programs. I was a DJ before producer, and I just love the feeling of being able to spin records, whether it be through vinyl’s or CDs. I love the feeling of interacting with the crowd, the iconic “DJ mixing” approach, and being able to smile when you’re busting out a ridiculous mix whilst viewing the crowd eating it up.
Do you prefer to dj or be in the studio?
It really depends on my mood! Sometimes I just love playing for an amazing party, and sometimes there’s nothing more I’d love to do then just stay home and work on music. I really jump back and forth between the two. Making music is the ultimate love for me right now; it’s an expression and extension of who I am and how I see the musical world. Djing is an extension of the rockstar life, having a blast with hundreds/thousands of people, and creating an experience through sound.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan on making a lot of music this year, really infiltrating the market with originals and remixes. I’ve been working extremely hard on making tons of bombs, and the reviews so far have been just fantastic. As well, I’m excited for the increased bookings in my dj schedule, my agents are fantastic, and I look forward to playing at all these amazing new parties/festivals. I’m also very keen on remixing more pop based projects, and although I can’t say much at this point, there will be some extremely big tracks that I’ll be making which are non-dance related that will be released in the latter part of this year.
