Twisted Disco Interview with Darko Viric of Strange Worlds

For the grand finale we have decided to go back to our roots and get down right dirty, wrong and devious so without further a do let me introduce to you the ringmaster of all things depraved, VeryVeryVerywrongindeed’s Mr Tim Sheridan and ‘Zombies Ate My Brain’ and Circo Loco London resident Mr Shane Watcha for an exclusive main room b2b back set! This is going to be so wrong it’s right!

With Twisted Disco coming up this Friday 28th March we caught up with the head Honcho of Strange Worlds Darko Viric to find about abit about them and whats going to be going on at Pacha this Friday...........

Tell us a a bit about Strange Worlds?

Strange Worlds was an idea that I came up with back in 2004 whilst working with drum and bass producer Survival. As the name suggests nothing is quite the norm with us, for the music we produce are influenced by many different genres that span over a 100 years. From jazz to techno, funk to rock, classical to Romani gypsy jazz; Strange Worlds is what I feel would best describe what we do. With a top of the range recording studio and music production company; Our branded Strange Worlds Sound-system (Powered by Funktion One, Martin Audio & Turbosound) 35k's worth, which we have modified to suit our sound. We are now seeking to take thing to the next level.

Strange Worlds producers/Dj's are: Jason Miles (J-Sub) Rupert Davies (One half of Dance Conspiracy - Dub Wars) Sasha Rakas and myself Darko Viric

Your hosting the Terrace at Pacha for Twisted Disco this Friday, What can we expect to hear coming from the terrace?

Along with Pacha's new music policy, Strange Worlds fit in quite nicely. Most would say we're have our own unique sexy sounding style of putting tracks together. Whether it be in the studio or live on stage there's a certain magic that can be felt, and the magic comes from the heart. Deep, meaningful and yet sexy.

What have you and Strange Worlds been up to recently DJ wise?

After Bestival 2007 where we ended up running a stage (by accident). We we're booked in to provide a sound-system for The Loose Tea Party Tent, but ended up running the tent, it's lineup, it's DJ's & the bands. When to my surprise I found myself being the last DJ to perform on the last night (after all the other stages had closed) to a tent full with well over 500 people (not to mention the hordes of people standing outside bouncing away - I couldn't see them all, but heard them going nuts) my self and Rupert decided to take things to the next level. So from September 2007 till now we've been trowing party's in squats (shhh, honor don't tell anyone), in underground car parks, hotels and more recently 2 party's in mansion's in Hampstead London. The first went on for 3 days and the 2nd saw us plying to an empty swimming pool full of people, whilst the DJ box was a jacuzzi. I also was astonished to know that I was the last ever DJ to play the foyer @ The Key (the upstairs bit) which to me was an honor as I always dreamt of performing there. That set was HARD AS NAILS, and they loved it. ;)

What have you got coming up?

Spring 2008 sees the release of our first single on Paddy Freeform's new label Universal Vibes, a few low-key mini festivals that we're throwing together with Steve Mac of Houserockers, international gigs in Europe, our own stage at Guildfest 2008 and our return to Bestival are only a few of our gig dates, but there's more secret party's to be held in some locations which you'd never thought a party would happen. Keep your eyes and ears open for these party's, succulent, sexy, totally wrong yet you know them to be right!

Favorite club to play in and why?

For me my dream club to play is not actually a club but the largest dance stage in all the world; The Dance Arena @ EXIT Festival. But saying that I think if I was to choose a club it would have to be SPACE or DC10 in Ibiza as to me (in some ways) is still the mecca of dance music today.

What do you think of the UK scene and particular the ever changing London scene?

I think it's in serious trouble at the moment., with the rise of piracy, record company's have suffered major losses and we have seen many good labels fall under this pressure. But one thing is for sure, the creative side is starting to gain momentum. With many great and highly trained individuals who are producing art, it's a great time to listen and digest what's out there.

Best gig ever?

EXIT Festival 2007, where I was invited to perform as a part of Marko Nastic's Traffica label artist showcase. What a trip! What`s the strangest or most unusual place you`ve ever played a gig in? lol, now there's a few I could list, but for me the strangest yet most amazing place had to be DJ'ing in an empty jacuzzi overlooking an empty swimming pool FULL TO THE BRIM of people in a £28million mansion back in February 2008.. WOW! That was Strange Worlds Mansion Party No.2

What DJ tunes feature in your sets?

I like to promote what I do, so most of my material is featured within my sets. But records that others have made that I like are: Jan Driver, G'Nuk, Freak Show (Tim Sherriden & Jon Carter), most of the material that comes from Mobilee, Leena, Traum & Trapez, Kompakt and a few others that may catch my attention. I've also been known to throw dub-step and Romani gypsy jazz into the mix from time to time, depending on my mood.

Do you have plans to release your own records?

Not at all, not till the industry can stabilize a little. Why throw money into an empty pit? But anyone who's up for putting our material out is more then welcome to contact us via our website. ;)

To make it in this industry do you think Dj’s have to produce nowadays?

Not everyone can produce, and if that was the case the industry would be flooded with a massive amount of material thus leaving it high and dry. I have a saying that I heard once. "A DJ is like a waiter, you have them at McDonnald's, you have them in the ritz, silver service or your local cafe, a waiter is still a waiter. But without the chef the waiter has no food to serve, so producers are in someway more important then the DJ. Without producers, DJ's would have no music to play!"

Do you tailor your sets to particular venues or play it by ear?

I do try to plan my sets, but most of the time I go with my heart. I try to feel the crowd as much as I can but sometimes their just not the right crowd, and at times they are, but in London it seems that is a rarity these days. What are your top 5 tunes right now? I don't have a top 5 tunes as I like everything that I own otherwise I wouldn't have brought the vinyl in the first place. But label wise I think my top 5 would be Tram & Trapez, Kompakt, Freerange, Tempa & Wagon Repair. What`s the doggiest situation you`ve been in playing out? Playing in a toilette @ some squat in Hammersmith back in 2004.

DJs are renowned as having a glamorous life, if I was you for a day, what would be the most disappointing thing I’d discover about the reality of a DJs life?

Struggling to get recognized for what you do on a daily basis. If you're great you'll get there in the end, but if you're not GREAT then you'll always be that wanna-be Dj who never leaves his bedroom. I call them HERMITS! First record u bought? Can' actually remember which it was, but I do remember buying an original of LFO's LFO which melted on the radiator when I was too tired once. ;( Was music a part of your childhood? Very much so. My brother was a top jazz/blues pianist, DJ with an awesome collection of rare groove, funk, soul, jazz, classical, early electro, and house music from Chicago.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen in a club?

Now i've seen some strange things but if I was to tell you what it was you'd probably phreak and think YUK! So we'll keep this one nice a clean. ;) During the winter i'm always in the studio working whilst in summer i'm either out touring or riding my wake-skate and wake-board.

What`s your most prized possession and why?

My Sherman Quad Modular Filterbank, as there's only 79 of them ever made; A real classic as music kit goes.

Which four words best describe you?

Strange, unique, funny & talkative.

Last thing you regretted?

Not much, I'm pretty much happy with most of choices that 'I've made in my life (so far). On thing I will say is recently I have been asked to make the choice between my work in music & my studio or my girlfriend, and this was hard to make. I love her, but unfortunately she cannot ask me to choose between her and my work. It's unfair for I love both equally, but the answer is simple, and I choose music.

What does the future hold for you and Strange Worlds?

Who knows? Let's just wait and see. Just remember that Strange Worlds are more then a DJ crew. We are producers, musicians and we're artists. Look out for up and coming releases o various labels for 2008.
