Resident Interview

Ben Gomori has been DJing on the London scene for the last few years and has held successful residencies at all the big clubs across the capital. At only 23 he has combed DJ and Journalism and has just started to produce as well. We catch up with the Twisted Disco resident to get the low down..........

Can you please introduce yourself and tell us where you are at the moment?

Hello, my name is Ben Gomori, I’m 23, I enjoy long walks in the country and a good bottle of wine and am quite handy with a jazz flute. I’m currently in my office in Shoreditch writing about dance music. It’s hot outside! I want to sunbathe.

You have played at all of London’s big clubs. Where is your favourite place to play and why?

Tough one....I really miss The Cross and T2 at Turnmills. I had a lot of great times playing in both of those places over the last year and a bit, and I loved that feeling of being right in amongst the crowd. Playing the main room for Fabric for Union was pretty awesome too – quite a privilege when you think about all the people who have graced those decks. I really enjoyed playing in AKA for Waveform at the start of the year too, getting the place going – would love to rock that mofo again.

Have you been spending a lot of time in the studio recently and do you have anything coming out?

I’ve had a bit of a break recently but a few bits lined-up. I’ve done a 2-track techno/tech-house EP ‘Spanish Liqueur EP’ with Zoo Project’s resident live act Saytek, which will be out on his label Machine Func. in June/July hopefully, and then I’ve got a progressive house kinda thing I did with The Gallery DJ competition champ John Bentley called ‘Maida Vegas’ which looks like it might get signed to a new label soon.
Back in the studio next week with Grin Recordings’ Jack Michaels – one to watch.

What sounds can we hear being played for your set at Twisted Disco on May 30th at Pacha?

Welll haven’t quite decided yet but Pacha makes me want to play proper house music! It will probably be a mixture of hard grooving house and some more electronic sounding stuff with big build-ups and so on.

What makes you groove?

Tech house, saucy sub-bass-driven minimal techno, classic house music, old skool hip-hop....lots of stuff! The sun, sexy hi-hat patterns, shakers, bongos and congas...

Have you ever had to take a massive risk musically?

Does playing Ace Of Base count? No that’s not a risk, that’s always a dead cert. Hmm actually yeah, I decided it would be a great idea to drop Prince’s classic ‘Controversy’ in the house/electro room at a hard dance afterparty in Vauxhall once. I had one fat bird booing me, and another guy running up to me telling me I was a legend and that I had made his night.
I would have pulled it off OK if I hadn’t hit the wrong Loop button when trying to mix out and completely ballsing it up. Ooops. I was tired, it was dark, what can I say.
I love taking well-calculated risks in sets – although it might not always get the effect you want, when it does it’s immense.

Who do you think is going to blow us away this year?

Too many! Troydon, Red Robin & Jakob Hilden/Format B, Aeroplane, Hercules & Love Affair, Style Of Eye is KILLING it at the moment, Johnny D and Frederico Mollinari from Oslo Records....

What piece of kit can you not live without?

My Pacemaker pocket-sized DJ gadget – it’s the nuts!

Where else can we catch you over the next few months?

In June I’ll be playing a couple of dates at my residency for Two AM at 54 Commercial Street in Shoreditch, East London, as well as playing for Jaded at AKA on 29th June – which I am really looking forward to!
