Clint Lee Interview

How old were you when you started playing?

As soon as I finished my schooling, out came the wheels of steel and have never looked back! What or who is behind your musical inspiration? Being brought up with music, my inspiration goes far back as I can remember. I was influenced by electronic acts such as Depeche Mode/ The Orb/ Orbital/ Underworld/ Faithless but was still very in tune with local african artists and the sound of kwaito. In today's world I look apon artists such as Solomun / Gabriel Ananda / Layo & Bushwacka / Luciano/ Audion / Dan Berkson & James What to name a few...

How would you describe your sound?

Quite simply organic! I like to keep it as earthly as possible incorporating rhythms of indigenous sounds and tribal beats bringing vocals and native chantings into play. This sound can be experienced through minimal to maximal bordering on the lines of sexy house and romantic techno.

You run a lot of events in London. Tell me abit about them?

Well, I ran Glitch for a couple years in some of London's leading clubs but decided to put it to one side as I was urging to focus more on production and djing. However, I continue to work alongside some of London's leading party organisers, namely Zombies Ate My Brain / Circoloco / Maximal / Jaded / Very Very Wrong Indeed to name a few.

Any plans to jump in the studio this year?

mmm....this is where it gets exciting! Have been working together with Alex Corr(Overtone) in the studio for the past 6 months. We in no hurry to release just yet. Waiting for the right time in our busy work schedules to release and put full focus and attention on it. I cant reveal too much but something cool is coming your way!

I hear you are off to Ibiza this year. What have you got lined up?

I've been frequenting Ibiza for the past 3 years now and have finally got my ducks in a row to be based out there this season. There is still alot to be finalised but will be working with The Zoo Project in unique locations on the island including The Ibiza Zoo! Will be teaming up with Filthy Gorgeous and Thailand party moguls Ibiza Tailandia, in Las Dalias, San Carlos. This is Ibiza's oldest venue, so do come check it out! Will possiby be doing weekly's at Savannah's back room. Will also be launching Zombies Ate My Brain on the island this year! Besides this a few bars such as Noctambula with DJ Manu (Minimal Hospital) Hush with Sam Devine. Still more to be confirmed.....keep up to date on www.clintlee.com

What one track never fails?

Phew.....there are a few but one track that comes to mind is, Contemplation by Josh One. Its been around for ages and is timeless.

What have been up to recently and what can we expect from you over the next couple of months?

Well, have been guesting at various events around town and spending my days working in the studio. In the summer season, you can either catch me on the White Isle or in London for Zombies Ate My Brain & Jaded Zombies at AKA,The End.

Who is you top tip for 2008?

Solomun, no doubt! He creates the perfect picture to lose yourself on any dancefloor. Lucio Aquillina is also a firm favourite at the moment.

Have you any mad plans 2008?

Isn't Ibiza enough mate? oh okay....Will be doing a mini tour in Portugal in July with Diynamic Records. Am planning on another South African Tour in Nov/Dec 2008 which will include a few Thailand dates too. There might be a South American tour in early 2009!
What ingredients make a good party?

A healthy portion of the RIGHT sound A Dollop of the p
perfect party crowd A Sprinkle of party tricks and props oh....and a dash of Tequila all round!

What’s your favourite tune?

Asteroids by Dan Berkson & James What... A prime example of Romantic Techno!

Who would be part of your fantasy crowd?

Victoria Secrets Lingerie models and me.(you did say fantasy, right?)

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve played?

Most of my gigs have been in sophisticated clubs or warehouses but there have been some venues which are out of the norm, namely Hedges & Butler which in itself is a true timewarp into the 1920/30's. Then of course The London Stone with its hidden toilets in book cases and old artifacts that surround this unique venue.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

Well it was a succession of things whilst on tour in South Africa which included Skydiving at 9000 feet/ Bungee Jumping off the highest bridge in the world and doing my driving test in a huge truck!

If I wasn’t a DJ I’d be?

involved with music some way or another, perhaps producing music video's creating visual effects to my own music productions. I would probably have more time on my hands so would also be a skydive instructor in my spare time.
