EXCLUSIVE: Pacha Beyond Interview With Lost Souls!!!

This article is about Lost Souls presents... Deetron [Music Man] @ Pacha in London (UK), Fri 12 Sep 2008

Given their phenomenal success at Public Life over the last couple of years, it was only right that their large army of clubbers were given a BIGGER platform, and indeed podium, to strut their stuff on. Presenting to you Lost Souls at Pacha. Be careful who you bump in to.....(!)

Who came up with the name 'Lost Souls'? And what's it supposed to mean?

My friend Clive and I came up with it when leaving Fabric one morning. We were feeling a little jaded and on the way back to the underground station, Clive said to me "I feel like a Lost Soul". We were already planning on throwing a party and agreed that we wanted everyone that came to our party to leave and feel like we were feeling.

How did you all meet?

Lost Souls is quite a big family now we have over 15 residents that are on rotation and loads of other people helping out behind the scenes. It's not really how we met but more why we met, we came together because we all love the same music. Lost Souls has a strict music policy. It's why you won't hear the same tracks that everyone else is playing at most of the other "techno" or "minimal" parties in London.

How did you get into house music?

I've been into house music since I was about 14. During that time at school, everyone was going through the 'garage' phase but that never interested me, so I used to listen to my older brother's CDs - which was stuff like Technotronic and Rhythm On The Loose. It all started from there.....

What's been the proudest moment in your professional life so far?

Well I wouldn't say my life is that professional(!) but last week when I picked up the vinyl from my label's first release, there was something about holding the vinyl in my hand which just made me reflect on how far I had come in the last three years, I started out just wanting to put a party on and now I'm holding a Lost Souls vinyl.

What productions/releases have you got coming up?

Well, the next release on Lost Souls is from Perc with remixes from Misc. and Misc.'s new alias Alpha Rhythm - exclusive to Lost Souls dubstep.

What did you do for your last birthday and when was your birthday?

My birthday was back in April. I was flown to Austria to play at Snowbombing. Unfortunately, this was just when BA were having trouble with their new terminal, so - on the way back - my flight was cancelled and I had to wait in Munich for 24 hours. I decided the best option was to fly to Amsterdam and meet some friends who were on their way back from Timewarp in Germany. So it turned out to be a pretty cool birthday in the end.

And, how young does that make you?!?!

21.

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

Too many weird things. To be honest, I'd rather not say.

What's the best night out you've ever had?

There are a few that stick out in my head; one of them was last week when I was invited by Adam Beyer to go to his Drumcode party at Meganite in Ibiza. I flew in Wednesday morning and left the next day. Another was seeing Ritchie Hawtin play from 4am - 12pm at Fabric back in March. It was probably the best set I've ever seen.

The last one wasn't really a "night", per say, it was at one of the Lost Souls parties at Public Life on a Saturday afternoon. Chris Leibing had heard of the party and asked if it was OK for him to play. There were over 150 people in the club which is only supposed to hold 60. I have never been in a crowd like it - the atmosphere was amazing.

So, what's your favourite record of all time?

Dance Music - The Suburban Knight - Collaboration Alpha
Non Dance Music - Deftones - Digital Bath

What's the worst DJing gig you ever had?

Hmmm.... Without a shadow of a doubt, the Zoo Thousand festival! What a shambles! I was asked for Lost Souls to host a tent; I was given a budget and ended up booking Barem (M-nus) from Argentina, Headhunter & Perc. There were about 3000 people there and the festival could hold 15,000 - so most of the DJs and bands were playing to hardly anyone and to top it off the shady promoters refused to pay anyone, so Barem and the other guys never got paid. It was a great disappointment as it was our first festival and we thought it was going to be really good.

What can't you live without?

My laptop. I use it all the time; whether it's for work, listening to music, DJ, producing or just to watch a film.

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you'd ever had?

Picking peppers in a greenhouse!!!

What was the last record you bought?

I recently just brought about 25 dubstep vinyl. One that sticks out of the bunch is Martyn - "Vancover".

Who or what are your musical influences?

Here's a few for you:

A Guy Called Gerald / Adam Beyer / Aphex Twin / Deftones / James Holden / Jeff Mills / Kraftwerk / Led Zeppelin / LFO / Matthew Johnson / Misc. / Massive Attack / Nirvana / Prodigy / Queens of the Stone Age / Rage Against the Machine / Radioactive man / Plastikman / Sleep Archive / Smashing Pumpkins / The Cure / The Doors / Tool...(!)

Is there anything unusual or weird about you that you'd like to share with us?

Well, I'm petrified of spiders. There's sort of a running joke in my family; they find it funny to scream 'spider' when I'm sleeping.

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

I would want to go back to the late 80's and early 90's. I would love to have been part of the rave culture. The Hacienda & The M25 raves would have been amazing.

What tunes have lodged themselves in your record box/CD bag and refuse to leave?

Misc. - Unspoilt Monsters
Deetron - Open the Gates
Ritchie Hawtin - Tunnel
Adam Beyer - A walking contradiction

What do you make of the new concept for Pacha Beyond?

Well with The Key & Turnmills closed and The End now closing in January, London is screaming out for venues that will book good dance music events, so I think it's a great idea. The population needs educating about good dance music!

And, finally, what can we expect of you ahead of your set at Pacha Beyond with Lost Souls?

70's and 80's disco classics!
