PLUSH DAFUNK : An Interview With THOMAS GOLD

This article is about Plush Dafunk Summer of Love with THOMAS GOLD @ Pacha in London (UK), Sat 06 Jun

Having topped the Beatport charts with his remix of Delerium Silence in summer 2008, Thomas Gold has achieved yet another big success in the international electro-house scene with “Everybody Be Somebody” and “Losing My Religion” and is causing quite a stir with two brand-new remixes for his buddies Alex Gaudino and Antoine Clamaran. So, what can we expect for the rest of 2009 from Thomas Gold?

Hi Thomas,

Seeing your productions exploding, having a hectic DJ schedule across the world and having your remix of Delirium “Silence” voted best progressive house track on Beatport must feel very rewarding? But being the super star that you are, it must be hard work.

Take us through your typical working week.

TG: Actually I have quite a "regular" week (at least I try to); I work daily in my studio from Monday morning until Thursday night on productions, remixes and new ideas. Friday is very often taken for travelling for my DJ gigs at the weekend. When I go for farther destinations, Australia for example, I take some work with me on my laptop so I don't lose too much time. Sometimes its quite stressful, but I love it…

So are you a DJ that turned his hand to production or a producer that was in demand to perform?

TG: I took my first steps at 7 when I learnt to play keyboard, I only started to actually produce my own music when I was 15 years old, but this was just a personal hobby and nothing you would have listened to... A few years later I started DJing as well.

For me DJing is not only part of what I love and really enjoy doing, it’s also kind of a necessity to gain essential experience about what is really going on in the clubs, what people like. So I've been doing both for years now but for the production, I started doing this professionally about 7 years ago.

Where do you draw your inspirations for your own material?

TG: Anywhere! This can be in a club when I play during my set, when I listen to another DJ, or even when I listen to music on the internet or on the radio. I also go to Miami and to Ibiza regularly to catch all new developments in the club music scene.

What’s the secret of becoming a successful artist these days and is there any advice you’d like to give to the aspiring producers out there?

TG: As I think there is no 'secret', my advice would be that you focus on what you are really into, on what you really love! And if this is music - go for it! It can take ages and it can be very very hard sometimes, but if you hang on and keep it up, you have a big chance to become a successful producer and DJ!

Over the last few years house music has become a lot harder, electro had its thing and then it went tech, now there appears to be an injection of uplifting melodies. What is your prediction on the direction of quality house music over the next six months?

TG: Hard to predict, but for the next months I would say there will be more of these uplifting, somewhat trancy elements in combination with deep basslines and rhythms. I’m happy about the fact that house music is getting back to it's roots, cool, undergroundy but still moving the crowds on the dancefloor

Aren’t we just following a cycle and within the next five years we’ll all be playing Hard House at 145bpm again?

TG: I don't think so. There are some kinds of 'circles' music is going through, but always influenced by other trends and seasonal developments. So maybe something like the former Hard House might come back, but altered and adapted to the current music scene. For the kind of house music as I produce it, I don't think we will fall back into too old structures again.

In your own words describe “fidget house”.

TG: For me it's a combination of some tech house and minimal elements with some fast played percussive sounds, often hi-tuned tom sounds (or similar). There are some really good productions to pick up this style but sometimes it can be a bit boring…

If someone stole your hard drive which contained all your music, how much ransom would you pay to get it back.

TG: Oh, good question. You want to steal it and know how much you can get? Haha…no, seriously -it is worth a lot for me, not financially but ideally. I can't figure out a number but I think I would rather try to re-do and re-collect all my stuff before paying an extortionate sum.

On your travels over the last year what City’s are providing the best clubbing experiences in doors or out?

TG: In the last year, my best 'indoor' experiences were in Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo, in Sydney and in Paris. I had the chance to play in amazing clubs for great audiences.

When it comes to outdoor clubbing - of course it is Ibiza and also Italy - Ibiza is just indescribable for it's unique ambience and some Italian clubs have simply wonderful nice outdoor areas.

We hope you’re a man that enjoys the finer things in life? and we’re really excited to have you headlining Plush Dafunk’s Summer Of Love party at Pacha on Saturday 6th June. Have you been working on any new material that might get an exclusive on the night? If so tell us about that project.

TG: Of course there is! I will play my brand new Thomas Gold remix I just finished for Erick Morillo! He will play it for the first time at Pacha opening on June 3rd in Ibiza and I am excited to premiere it myself at your party!

Also I will play my own new single "Shake It" for the first time in the new Vocal Version…so be prepared!

Wow that is just awsome! Apart from your own storming productions what other artists are really doing it for you right now?

TG: Actually there is not 'the one' for me, there are many really good tracks from many producers out at the moment.

There is a lot of good business coming from Sweden I think - not only the well-known and established Swedish House Mafia - always delivering perfect tracks and fresh ideas - but also some young producers like Albin Myers and Avicii who bring some fresh air into the club music scene.

Can we expect any interesting collaborations happening for the summer?

TG: Yes, I am working with Abel Ramos presently, just started a collaboration with Albin Myers and I am actually talking to David Tort about doing something together for late summer, so many things to come…

Who would you most like to remix a track for?

I just did one for Erick Morillo - always been on top of my wishlist; but I would also love to do one for Axwell.

List the big 5 tracks tearing it up for you right now?

Thomas Gold - Shake It
DJ Chus vs. Niki B. - Hossa (Chris Soul Remix)
Kolombo - Je T'aime_(Original Mix)
Milton Channels - Hey You (Original Mix)
Alex Celler - La Palma (original)

What’s big in your ipod?

TG: Some Chill-out compilations and TV series 'Family Guy' - always good for killing time on longhaul flights!

Which 3 items would be on your desert Island?

TG: My wife, my ipod and a charger working on solar energy

What 3 things would you ban if you could?

TG: My alarm clock. My mobile phone. German tax law.

If you were the real “Slim Shaddy” who would you disrespect in your next big Rap record and why?

TG: All the people who only make music for of the money. All the people who put my (and all other producers') tracks (into which we put so much time and effort) on illegal download platforms without thinking even a bit how badly they damage the music business.

And Finally… what is your master plan on Saturday 6th June at Plush Dafunk?

TG: Party and rock the crowd. That's the plan!

Thomas now we're even more excited to have you grace the wheels of steal at our Summer Of Love party and can't wait hear your exclusive tracks.. Bring It On and Thank You!
