Interview with House pioneer Rui Da Silva

This article is about Nightowl with Rui Da Silva @ Pacha in London (UK), Fri 19 Jun

We catch up with House legend Rui Da Silva before he flys over to London to headline the launch of Nightowl's new Pacha residency.

Producer, DJ, record label boss, musical innovator. In 2001 his music leapt from club to radio when his song Touch Me became an international number one single. Today he continues to produce club tracks and experimental electronic music always, as he puts it, “trying to change the sound and evolve as staying still gets me bored”.

Hi Rui, thanks for taking some time out to answer a few questions.

This is your first time playing for Nightowl, have you played at the iconic Pacha London before?

I have played for Pacha before but not for Pacha London.. i'm looking forward to it....

Can you tell us the last time that you played in London and where it was?

Last time i played in London for Always Fridays at the Egg...

How did you get into house music? And what inspired you to produce/remix your first record?

I got into house music when i first heard it back in 1989... it made me swap my bass guitar for a drum machine and a sampler....

What’s been the most memorable moment in your career?

There have been loads of memorable moments... from playing is remote places like Siberia Festival to 3000 people to rock places like Two Tribes festival in Australia for thousands more or play in Jerusalem and of course Ibiza where the parties are so great... i have been blessed to be able to travel and see the world from my work...

Tell us about your massive hit ‘touch me’, what was your inspiration for the track?

The inspiration for that track came from watching Oakenfold playing at the now defunct Home in London Leicester Square and thinking that i could make a song that would fit into his sets... only if i could find the right singer... a few days later i bumped into the singer while she was doing a impromptus performance in Piccadilly Circus and got her number... the rest is history....

Can you tell us about any of your new productions in the pipeline?

I'm currently residing in ibiza and working with a new singer.... I have releases lined up to come out on vinyl only Guido Schneider's label called MotivBank its a colaboration i did with Craig Richards from Fabric... and will come with remixes from Perlon Artist Thomas Melchior i also just released a remix for Made By Monkeys on Kult Records in New York City.

The Ibiza summer season is soon approaching, can you tell us more on your movements?

I'll be playing in ibiza this summer for Pacha, Privilege, Circo Loco DC10, Superfreak, Zoo
Project, Monza and a few others.....

What are your recommended Ibiza essentials this year?

Ibiza essentials this year are to avoid sunburn and always go out with sun shades....

And, finally, what can we expect of you ahead of your set at Pacha for Nightowl?

A mixture of house and tech house and some classics and brand new productions that i will be testing out...

You can catch Rui Da Silva at Pacha London on the 19th June for the launch of Nightowl's new residency...
