This article is about Liaison Pres. X-Press 2 and An21 (Swedish House Mafia) @ Pacha in London (UK), Sat 24 Oct
How would you explain house music to someone who didn’t know?
It all depends whether that person was aware of disco or not? If they were, then I'd say that house was just disco music updated. If they had no musical knowledge at all, then I think it would be very hard to explain it. Maybe something along the lines of electronic sex music made by machines.
Are you really that lazy?!
Me personally, yes absolutely. I think Diesel is too.
With regard to your collaborations, do you target people then write tracks, or write tracks then see who would fit?
It varies from track to track. With Lazy we did the backing track first and it was our engineer that thought it sounded like Talking Heads and thus prompting the phone call to David Byrne. Whereas with Give It, we actually did a couple of tracks with Kurt in mind. So it's a bit of both really. Just recently, we've been doing tracks more with certain people in mind.
How is the scene different now to when you started out?
One word. Internet. The web has changed everything to do with the scene. When we were first going out, you kind of had to know about things word of mouth or maybe pick up a flyer somewhere. Nowadays you just long on type something into a search engine and you can find out what's cool, what music you need and what club to go to. It's the same with music. 20 years ago you spent your whole time trawling through record shops, but now you just log onto beatport, type in your favourite dj and his chart is there for you to buy.
As artists who’ve seen the evolution form vinyl to digital, what are your thoughts on it? The pros and cons?
It's just natural progression. Embrace it or be left behind.I love technology and all that it brings. I'm relly into the idea that very soon, you'll be able to tip up at a club with just your headphones, log on at the mixer, call up your playlist and away you go. It's all there to be done now. maybe I should copyright it!!
How does it work with both of you DJing? Is it planned much?
No it's not possible to plan it. We just kind of gauge a club when we arrive or beforehand to get an idea of what people are into, and take it from there.
If you weren’t DJing, what would you be doing now?
Pimp or pusher.
What were you doing at 2pm last Sunday?
Watching Antiques Roadshow reruns. Rock n roll eh?
Do you prefer producing or DJing and why?
I love both. I love the whole creative thing that goes with production. You know, starting out with just a bunch of ideas and inspirations and turning these into a finished piece of music. then seeing it grow and develop. With the DJing it's more of an instant gratification. The production is like a long lasting relationship whereas the DJing is like a quick one off the wrist.
What’s been your biggest challenge this year?
My garden.
What can people expect from you at Pacha?
House, house and more fu**ing house!
