Catching up with Zoo Brazil...

This article is about Pure Pacha @ Pacha in London (UK), Sat 05 Sep

What drew you into all this?

Well long story, but I in my youth I dreamt of magical things like disco balls and of playing electronic music. I started DJing back in 1989, playing bodymusic and early acid house stuff, then later I fell in love in the rave scene and built up my own studio.

And what inspires you and your productions?

Life, movies and other producers, not only dance producers, but more pop rock producers. Flood and Brian Eno are people that always blow me away, their approach to music is open and always looking forward with a foot in tradition, something I always try and do myself.

You’ve been going a long time under many different monikers, how do you choose which one to use?!

As I produce and write so much music I needed a few aliases so the market would not be flooded with releases from Zoo Brazil. And sometimes I pick a new artist name for legal matters if a label like an exclusive name to work with etc.

Why do you think Sweden has become synonymous with the electro house sound recently with the likes of you, Axwell, Seb Ingrosso?

Seb is a good friend and we played together and might release something on his label soon. Axwell is somebody I see from time to time in the studio. Stockholm is a small city and we have a great vibe here and we all try to help each other out if needed. Sweden is definitely not all about electro house, we have a long history of great electronic music. Not sure really why but Sweden has always been good at picking up new things fast and build something around it.

What’s the scene there like?

It’s really good and a lot of things happen, but I don’t go out much when I’m home. I’m either in the studio working or relaxing when I’m home in Stockholm. The scene is really good.

Why do you think you have blown up in the last few years after 16 years in the game?

In the past I was really into deep and underground electronic music, and still am. But these days I’m not afraid to go all in and do whatever. If I like it, I produce it, and I release it. Good music is good music. In the past I was too narrow minded I guess and a bit too young.

What do you expect from the crowd at Pure Pacha, have you played before?

I played Pacha in Argentina which was amazing, I have never played Pacha London so I’m really looking forward to it and hope people will be ready. I heard the crowed should be great so will be really fun!

Can you tell us what you’ll be playing? Any exclusives?

I have around 30 new Zoo Brazil tracks I’ve done in the last few months and a lot of remixes... also I always get new stuff from my Swedish friends like Ingrosso, Dahlbäck and Angelo so expect much exclusive, unreleased stuff and my own edits.

How much do you tailor your sets to the venue/crowd?

I don’t really - I know what I like and get booked because people know what I play and produce in the studio. I’m very eclectic in some way but am always about the straight forward party.

Do you prefer to DJ, make tracks, or hear others playing your tracks?

I like both to be honest - I really love to combine the song writing and producing with the DJing and touring.

What would you be doing if it weren’t for this?

It would definitely be something with music or I would not be around at all I guess. When I was young I wanted to be a police officer...but now I’m so happy with what I do so I have no regrets at all.

How does your favourite music make you feel?

Like a little fluffy cloud.

When were you last impressed?

This morning in the studio when I heard Jesper Dahlbäcks new remix of “Juri H - My Brother" a track for Turbo Records. I was impressed.

And depressed?

Love can really tear you apart, so not a long time ago.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I do everything myself and work for myself. Travelling and see amazing places and meeting great people! I always feel happy when I’m walking to the studio with my takeaway coffee in my hand early in the morning - nothing beats that!

Zoo Brazil plays at Pure Pacha on Saturday 5th September.
