This article is about DNDC Presents MAISONICA (Featuring KING ROC & The FRISKY DJs) @ Parker McMillan in London (UK), Sat 03 May 2008
MAISONICA at Parker McMillan on Sat 3rd May will be the second joint party this year from the DNDC promotions boys (Mark - DIVERTED, Nolhy - NOLHY'S NIGHT, Ben - DISCO3001 & Gilly - CITYBEATS)... And it will be a chance for them to up the stakes from the last successful event back in March and will feature the DJ talents of the FRISKY DJs in the House Room!!
Now, if any of you are asking yourselves the question "who are they?", then my reply to you would be - Have you never been out on the London Clubbing scene?? Cause if you have, then where have you been!?! The FRISKY DJs have been playing at all the major London clubs for the past 4 years and i grabed a few minutes of their time in order to aks them of few questions... read on!!
1 - Lets start from the begining, how did you both get into music and eventually DJing?
Paulo: I have always loved music, ever since I could remember. Its something that has always been around me from a very young age, my folks loved their music, and they loved to party, I guess that’s where I get the love of entertaining people, nothing in life brings me more joy. I started Djing in the mid 90’s, and I believe I was one of the very first DJs to use purely cd’s, back then I bought two standard cd players with a pitch control knob, cueing didn’t exist, it was carnage! lol!
Alex: Yeah like Paulo Ive always been around music, the Mediterranean’s love a good old dance, and my family were no exception. I’ve been collecting records for years, bought my first set of decks in my late teens, played at a few Uni parties and house parties, but nothing serious til I hooked up with Paulo
2 - When exactly did the FRISKY DJs start? How did the hook up come about?
Paulo: We hooked up through a mutual friend, on a beach in Portugal back in 2002, spent the holiday chatting about tunes we both owned, old funk classics, 80’s dance & early house tracks. Then I think we come up with the idea of throwing some parties, as what we liked there wasn’t really enough of them. In those days the best parties in London were Penge & Lovepuppy, but these only came around every couple of months. They had everything we wanted to see in clubland, funky underground music and an amazing glammed up and musically switched on crowd. Most of these events were on Sundays so were full of industry people, DJs, dancers and bar works (similar to Ibiza). So when we started in the early days we used a similar format albeit on a smaller scale, but amazingly they just grew and grew.
Alex: We started DJing back 2 back during one of our parties, I think a DJ didn’t turn up, so as we both wanted to play and couldn’t decide which it would be we went back 2 back, and it just worked. I think the fact we are so competitive also helps, we always try to out do each other with the tracks we play, the crowd benefits in the end.
3 - What would you currently describe your musical styles as?
Alex: This is always a great question cause we play across the board but with a common theme, which is funk! And this is one ingredient that allows us to do what we do. Depending where we are playing and what time of the night or day it is we will vary our sound from vocal party house to electronic tribal house, the beauty is its all interchangeable because its all funky. If it shakes your arse we’ll probably own it!
4 - Some DJ pairings last forever and others sometimes drift away from each other... How do you see things panning out for you guys?
Paulo: lol, great question! Its funny cause character wise we couldn’t be more opposite, but I guess that’s why we work well together. I’d say even if we stopped DJing tomorrow we’d probably still do something else together anyway, its been about 4 years and I don’t think we’ve ever fallen out, or even argued for that matter. So we’re a pretty strong team.
5 - You guys have been DJing together for a number of years now, so i want to know what has been the best gig and which has been the worst?
We’ve been lucky to play at some very special parties, but we actually both agree on the same one as the best, The Cross closing party we had the midnight set in the marquee. We played a classics set and we’ve never felt so much love from a crowd as we did that night.
As for the worst set, I’m not going to be specific, but when you’re booked to play a completely empty room it kinda makes ya feel a tad depressed! We’ll happily play to a handful of people if they are feeling what we’re doing, no problem!
6 - Are there any plan to produce music together?
We already are! We’ve built our own studio and have produced a few tracks, our latest, a remix of Precious Love will definitely be played at MAISONICA!!
7 - Finally, what can the MAISONICA crowd expect from you on the 3rd of May?
Paulo: This is our first time at MAISONICA, but we’ve had the pleasure of playing at Nolhy’s Nights and Diverted in the past, and I have to say both have some fantastic clubbers who are well up for a party. It’s also my birthday weekend so I’ll be on a mission to party hard! Sambuccas all round!!!
BRILLIANT STUFF!! Plus we have a "2for1" DRINKS OFFER on selected beers and wines from 8 to 10pm... So that will get your birthday celebrations off in style!!
