This article is about DNDC Presents MAISONICA (Featuring KING ROC & The FRISKY DJs) @ Parker McMillan in London (UK), Sat 03 May 2008
1 - Hi guys, please introduce yourselfs…
MUZZ - I'm Muzz Khan - a London-based, classically-trained actor, DJ, promoter and all round nut-case/nice guy with a very dodgy northern accent, with equally dodgy dance moves!!! I can often be found frequenting various nightspots around London spinning heavenly hedonistic house music, fiercely frenetic electro and obscure yet optimistic old-skool. Failing that, I can still be found at the aforementioned places getting deeply lost in the music!!! Somebody buy me a bloomin' map!!!
GRIMEY - Grimey, been DJing for coming up 3 years as resident for Fervor. I’ve managed to play at The Cross, Turnmills, AKA, Egg, Chapel Bar, The Key & Scala…
2 – MUZZ… You've not been playing out for many years, yet you seem to have managed to become quite a busy boy lately... Tell us more about that and how it's been!
Years?!?! If only!!! I've only been playing out for 11 months, having had my debut in mid-May last year. But, yeah, it's been a phenomenal debut year and I'm shocked, proud but very humbled as to how well it's gone. I've been so so lucky to have played at some of the venues that I have at so far. If you'd've told me a year ago that I'd have my debut at Pacha and would subsequently be spinning at The Cross, KOKO, The White House, Canvas, The Key, Mass and The Island in that time, I would've told you to p**s off and stop filling me with false hopes!!! I'm so happy with how it's going.
Why have I become such a busy boy??? I guess, crucially, the groundwork for me was pretty much laid out for quite a while. I'd been obsessed with house music since I was 8 and was an avid trainspotter by the time I was 16. I know a lot about its history and always get immense pleasure from hearing great tunes that make you wanna go crazy. So, that was the kind of sound I ended up buying - uplifting and fiery tunes with a rollicking good kick!!! Being involved in the whole scene as a clubber (in a massive way) for a few years prior to DJing helped. I managed to suss out the nights that I liked and work out which nights I wanted to play for - nights that shared my philosophy for producing breathtaking moments of musical brilliance on a dancefloor. I then approached the nights I wanted to play for and begged them for a shot. Thankfully, some of them said 'yes', liked what I did for them and have continued to ask me back ever since. It's truly been a whirlwind and I don't ever want it to stop....
3 – GRIMEY… What have you up to DJ wise recently? What is happening with your Fervor residency?
Our next FERVOR gig is on July 12th @ unit 7 and it’s the start of our new residency there for the rest of the year. And as usual, we're continuing our policy of booking some of the biggest names on the underground scene!!
4 – GRIMEY… MAISONICA has a broad house music policy with 1 room catering for the funky, vocal, uplifting crowd and the other for those dirty, twisty, techy fiends amongst us... You are obviously playing in the later of those 2 rooms - so what is it about those darker twisted beats that you prefer?
I find music with a more sinister, darker edge has more emotion to me. I like to get lost in the music I listen too when I go clubbing as a punter, so I like to play the kind of music that I think has the same affect on the crowd when I play.
5 – And MUZZ… With MAISONICA’s broad HOUSE music policy: Room 1 playing funky, vocal, uplifting, house and Room 2 playing deep, dirty, tech house... Will we see you at all in the darker, more twisted room or is it all about the party vibes of Room 1 for you?
For me, it is predominantly about the uplifting, bouncy, vocal (and classic) side of house. I've always loved the energy and optimistic euphoria associated with old-skool but having said that, EVERYONE has a darker side and I'm no different. I love dirty, filthy, nasty and twisted electro and have got a real fetish for the sleazier side of things. So, I've been able to DJ at venues playing that sort of style, too. Never say never!
6 – MUZZ… Have you ever played alongside any of the DJs in room 1 before? Are you looking forward to it?
Ha! It's funny you should say that because one of the things that's really exciting me about playing at Parker McMillan, is the fact that I'll get to play alongside Stu Hinge!!! I've shared the bill with the Frisky DJs and Stu Hinge once before but never at club level. In the days of old, I used to worship the guy. Whenever there was a Formula gig and I knew that Stu would be playing, I would make a concerted effort to come down. The guy really knew how to rock it and play fantastic tunes consistently. There weren't many DJs around who shared my ethos of playing a constant flow of cracking tunes, one after the other. In Stu I found a DJ who restored my faith in clubbing and matched my passion. Christ, all of that sounds SO cheesy - but it's true.
7 – And GRIMEY… You’ve played alongside KING ROC before, what are your opinions of the man and his style?
He is very talented producer so the technical side of his DJing will always be impressive... I’m looking forward to hearing him play again!
5 – Finally guys, what are current top 5 tracks and what can the crowd expect from you on the night?
MUZZ…1. Gold and Ortega – Miracle. Uplifting house at its best! 2. Ken Doh - Nakasaki's House. This is a little bootleg of mine with the added acappella by CeCe Rogers over the top of it… 3. Elektrik DJ – Crazy. Funky house with a capital F(!) and catchy vocals to boot! 4. Born To Funk - S.O.D.B. 5. Black Box - Everybody Everybody 2008. Twisted House!
The crowd can expect me to keep it high-energy, uplifting, catchy, vocal and, ultimately, REALLY danceable. I, like most people, wanna go out clubbing and not be given an excuse to sit down. I wanna dance all night, non-stop!!
GRIMEY… 1. The Flatlander - Weird Thoughts 2. Martinez -You 3. Bulgar Brothers - Rasin Ferver (Dapayk Mix) 4. James Holden - Lump 5. Marcin Czubala - I Am You
And from me, people can expect a well thought out journey of high quality electronic music, transcending through minimal, techno and tech house. I like to keep my DJing style quite simple, with a strong progression in my set - the tracks that I select are always very effective!!
Thanks guys... Look forward to hearing you both play at MAISONICA on the 3rd May!!
