This article is about House Rules w/ PAUL HARRIS (Dirty Vegas) @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 06 Dec 2008
How did you begin DJing? When I was about 15 I used to always listen to Chris Forbes , Pete Tong and all the Pirate Radio stations of the day while I was at school! Then when I got to 16, I’d sneak into London with my friends or brother and go to Heaven on a Monday, and I’d also sneak into Special Branch, I was bitten by the bug very quick.. I worked in the City from 16 to about 19 and it was during that time that I knew DJ’in was for me (and working with 6am to 6pm wasn’t!
What's been your most memorable DJ related moment? I had so many over the years, but to start I would have to Say the Monday night’s I did with Nicky Holloway and Phil Mison at the Milk Bar, every Monday was amazing, and it would always have all the DJ’s in there every week having a night off, I did it for a fair few years and its where I learnt my trade! Most recently was Warrung in Brazil, now that my friend is an amazing club!!
Where are you top 3 favorite places to DJ and why? Tribehouse – Düsseldorf, its been my favorite club every since my friend Loco Dice asked me to come play, I was there last at Halloween and it was so good! . I used to play a lot at Nikki Beach in Miami on Sunday’s with my good friend Cedric Gervias and that was amazing, and lastly I’d say South America, its all amazing down there!!!
How has the London dance scene changed over the past 15 years? It all goes in cycle’s, when I first started to DJ, the clubs were amazing, probably because I was all new to it, but the scene was still young. Then the early 90’s were amazing, place’s like Quite Storm, Yellow Book, Boys Own parties, Flying, Full Circle, I would say these were my favorite times the music was very open minded people would play anything. Over the year’s its changed so much, I guess the biggest things was the opening of Style bars /Vip place’s that had DJ’s and were open till 3am with no Cover, that hurt a lot of club’s, and over the last few year’s the After party scene has been a big thing. London seems to be ok and can always ride the storm, it always will, but now due to Turnmilll’s, the End ect closing down it’s a sad time, but im sure were soon to see some new Disco’s in town, HOUSE RULES is not a bad start!!
How did Dirty Vegas come about and explain your roll in the band? At the time I was working with Ben Harris (Not my brother!!), on a project called Hydrogen Rocker’s, we were at the time doing really well, everything we did was being played by Sasha, Digweed, Deep Dish ect, we have a lot of love. We were doing A LOT of remixes and we wanted to do a Vocal track of our own, I’d been DJ’in in Switzerland the week before and bumped into Steve Smith who I’d know for year’s, and he was singing at this gig, so I spoke to Ben said lets get Steve in and, the first track we did was Day’s go By, not a bad start I guess! In the band all 3 of us can play and produce, Ben and me do most of the programming and keyboard Skill’s and of course Steve sings and he’s a dab hand on the percussion!
What's the most rock and roll story you have from your time with Dirty Vegas? Now that we are all good boys, this is not right to print! , Lets just say we did have a good time! I guess either the time we played in Vegas with Moby or our first Visit to Moscow is up there with nights of the best!
Describe the difference from being in a band and DJing? Nowadays the lines blur a little, Dj’s are the new rock star’s, look at Guetta and Morillo! , My main thing for me is when your in a band you play your own music (Yeah sure some don’t!), and as a DJ you mostly play other peoples! The buzz is the same with both; a great show is a great show, a shit one. Is a shit one!!
On a night out in London where do you like to go? Im going to sound like a arse here, but I’d go for some good food with friends and probably end up in Bungalow 8 where I DJ a bit. To be honest I wouldn’t go to a club as I spend far too much time in them! Or I guess I’d go to my Local Curry house followed by the pub!!
Which DJ would you pay to see and why? Well im working in LA at the moment, I went to see DJ AM and Steve Aoki on Sunday, I didn’t pay, but after watching DJ AM’s skill’s, I’d pay!
What can the House Rules crowd expect from Paul Harris? Good music and good times!!!
