TM Juke Interview

This article is about jakin.the|house @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 16 Feb 2008

On Sat 16th February TM Juke will be gracing Plan B for jakin.the|house... Lets learn more about the man that makes such beautiful music.

1. So we're looking forward to you coming down to rock the foundations of Plan B. Can you just give us a quick overview of your DJ'ing style and how this varies from your production work?

Its pretty much a big bag of everything, lots of re-edits, lots of unreleased bits and remixes, funk, hiphop, soul, crunk, brunk, bruk, junk, broken, disco, drum&brass, latin, swing. Basically everything but jazz fusion!

2. 2007 was a very busy year for you, What was the biggest highlight and why?

Probably going to Australia & New Zealand in April, its a cliché I know but it really is beautiful

3. What are your earliest musical influences and who still inspires you to this day?

Lots of jazz guitar stuff; Johnny Smith, Wes Montgomery, Stan Getz,Michael Jackson... (Well Quincy Jones big time) read his autobiography this year if you haven't already. Gershwin, lots of other good stuff and bad stuff!

4. What artists do you think will really make their breakthrough over the next year?

Well hopefully Naim, I'm finishing producing an album of electro-hiphop-pop for him in February, to be released later this year (plug plug!)

5. Do you feel more at home in the studio or right at the forefront rocking the dance floor?

Both really, probably the studio or just writing is my favourite...if you do too much of one though you want the other more. At the moment I'm really enjoying being back in the studio, I did a lot of gigs on my own Djing and live with Alice Russell last year and didn't really get enough music done, so the next 6 months I'm trying to get my head down.

6.You have a good working relationship with Alice Russell. How did you two start working together?

Just through Tru Thoughts, she did a track on my first LP, and then we did a track for her first and we just started working together more from then on, we have quite a intuitive working relationship now which is great, its just relaxed and easy to get ideas together, which is how it should be.

7.When you sit down to start a track what is the first thing you usually do?

I'm pretty dedicated with my notebook these days so a lot of the time I'll just get an idea for something at a random time, then take it to the studio. But the first actual sound is normally guitar or piano, and then layer it up pretty quickly with other ideas. Normally you get the essence of a track written in about 20 mins, it just takes hours to polish it!

8.Away from music what interests you and if you were not working within the music industry what could you see yourself doing?

Maybe something graphic or Astronomy but I don't have a great memory or calculative brain, so I'd probably be pretty bad at it.

9.What is the defining moment of your career so far?

Getting to go to Japan.

10.What's the craziest thing you did last year?

I'm not really a snowboard / Parcours kind of guy, so probably not sleeping for days on end, and still coping with traveling and gigs, things get a bit spacey!

11.What can we expect to hear next from Mr. TM Juke?

I've got quite a few projects on. Firstly I'm just finished an album with a drummer/percussionist. its all live rhythmic influenced stuff, its been ace recording it. We have some authentic Samba/Batucada stuff, some Go-go vibes, and a few vocal tracks. It should be out later this year under" TM Juke Vs The Jack Baker Trio"

Aside from that I've just finished demo-ing up the next Alice Russell LP, we are just looking for a label deal, then that should be on the streets.

I'm also finishing the TM Juke feat. Naim album in March, so hopefully that will be out at the end of the year.

Then another Me&You album (myself & Robert Luis) and a few mix CD's

And hopefully an Alice acoustic LP.

12. Just as an after thought, Would you rather kiss a crocodile or a bear?

Bear
