Interview with MICKY SLIM

This article is about House Rules Summer Special w/ MICKY SLIM @ PLAN B in London, Sat 05 Jul 2008

Where did you first discover a love for dance music and what are your influences?
I’m a proud Midlander and used to go to Godskitchen, UK Midlands and Progress in Derby - great memories
My influences though come from Reggae, Hip Hop, Jungle, Garage basically everything mashed up in to a big melting pot.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned about the profession you could pass on to any budding DJs?
Trust nobody, sounds negative but I’ve had a few bad experiences.
On a more positive note, follow your own sound, have drive and believe in yourself. There are plenty of talented DJs out there that sit around and expect it to come to them. My biggest asset is I’ve made music my life, I’m grateful for the chance I’ve been given and I’m gonna take it.

What have been your biggest three highlights of your career?
(In no particular order)
• Being resident for Godskitchen (especially my Radio 1 essential mix at Global)
• Being resident for Judgement Sundays in Ibiza (2nd year now)
• Playing at Lush in Port Rush. Carl was a big influence in giving me my first plays and getting my JS residency in Ibiza, I love going to pay there

Where do you most love DJing the most in. A club or at a festival?
I love DJing in a club, it’s where my music fits and where I perform at my best. I love ceilings, sweaty people and kick ass sound systems. The darker and louder the better!

Talk us through the Radio 1 Essential Mix you did in place of James Zabiela at Global Gathering and how it happened?
Purely luck…I was in Poland and Ibiza a few days before, my CD’s were not properly sorted as I only had the names of the tunes on paper and had not written on them – they were all over the place. I was going to organise them in the car from the airport but the CD player was broken. Anyway I started playing and was told that James was running late in traffic and would have to play 15 / 20mins more until he got there. About 10mins later I was then told he’s completed stuck you’re going to have to play on and do a radio essential. I looked at my CD wallet and it was everywhere. There was a massive crowd now gathering, I looked at the crowd and there were about 2000 people there that had been there through my set, if I’d played the same set they would have said “what the hell’s he doing” so I started to rummage through the CD wallet pulling stuff out of everywhere, there were CDs and paper flying all over the place, unbelievable but when I look back but it worked and I smashed it. I came off afterwards absolutely buzzing it was amazing and a moment I’ll always remember.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given by a fellow DJ?
Not sure it was from a DJ but the best advice I can give is to make a kick ass bootleg of a big tune – look at me and what happened with “Jump Around”.
Nowadays it’s all about production, if you wanna make it, you have to produce tunes.

As a DJ what’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made?
Ha… I wasn’t even DJing at the time. I was with Chris Lake @ Tangled in Manchester just at the time when Changes was blowing up. He was DJing, the booth isn’t very big there and I was jumping around like a madman. As he dropped “Changes” the crowd were going berserk and it was going right off. Just as the tune kicked back in I jumped up and caught the main fuse with my elbow, the power to the whole club was killed – I felt like such an idiot…

Name 3 DJs you’d pay to see? (no particular order)
• Switch
• Yoda
• Fatboy Slim

Outside of DJing what’s your most valuable possession?
My 50” plasma – it’s amazing

I understand you’re form Telford, like most people from the Midlands have you been to the Ice Rink?
Ha ha… yes who hasn’t. In fact a lot of the old Pandemonium (early rave nights) are from Telford so the scene there's got some history. I’m proud of my routes

MICKY SLIM will be appearing alongside Cream's GARETH WYN and Olli Collins (Pushca and Lip Glosz) in the Main Room for House Rules' Summer Special on Saturday 5th July.

Just to remind you in case you had too much of a good time I'm not going to make Plan B till after 12 as I'm playing just up the road (11-12). I've bought tickets to collect on the door so I'd be gratefull if you could make sure I can get in. Certainly don't want to miss this one!!!!
