This article is about House Rules w/ SEB FONTAINE @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 01 Nov 2008
We catch up with our headliner this month who needs no introduction to the London (or global) dance music scene. Frankily if its good enough for Cream, Ministry of Sound and Radio 1 then it's good enough for US. Our most eagerly awaited booking of the year, SEB FONTAINE headlines November 1st's installment of House Rules.
How did you first get in to DJing? I just needed to be in control of the music at parties , there were no famous djs and no-one got paid it was just about the music.
When did you first think I’m actually good at this and could make a living from DJing? I used to be a band agent and I guess I got enough work to quit the day job and I have never looked back.
What’s been you most proudest career related moment thus far? I think the fact that I have mad a career out of something that I truly love makes me proud . I have done a lot of pretty cool things , met cool people coupled with radio and my own nights , that makes me a happy bunny.
What’s your funniest DJ related story? I still loved the time that a crazy girl climbed up the theater curtains in a venue where I was djing in the vip box very high up . First a pair of shoes hit me and I thought that there was a complaint about the music then some nutter swung into the box from the curtains . Very funny .
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given by a fellow DJ? Not that I was given this but I’ve seen Norman Jay work a crowd and use “fluff on the needle” to his advantage many years ago . By the time that he had cleaned the record , his needle and worked the crowd up to a frenzy , he put the record back on and everybody went absoloutely mad . It taught me not to panic and use everything to your advantage .
What do you think will become of the London club scene now that so many of the big clubs have shut down? It’s not a good scenario at all . There are a lot of very good smaller clubs bringing through new talent which is good but too many of the big clubs are locked down by the same djs on rotation and I don’t feel that it is true reflection on the amount of dj talent that the world has to offer .
If you were a paying customer, which DJ would you pay to see and why? Norman Jay playing an old school grooves set. I haven’t heard one in ages and he is the master .
What can the House Rules crowd expect from you? We are gonna have a great time with a set balanced between serious new tunes and good fun .
Finally, what is your ‘if all else fails’ tune – is it still Hands Burn ‘Good Shot’? Haha no , I guess that it has changed in the last 10 years , I have a whole section dedicated to “if all else fails” .
Seb Fontaine quick fire questions! Most famous person you’ve seen dancing to your music? BONO Favourite DJ to party with? That would be telling Eat out or eat in? Eat out Favourite football team? Chelsea (season ticket ) Left or right handed? Right Club or festival? Club Vinyl or CD’s? Cds Favourite London restaurant? Nobu/Jay Sheekey Preferred set time? 12-3
