D-Joust Semi Final 2 - Who's taking part?

This article is about D-Joust DJ Competition - Semi Final 2 @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 18 Oct 2008

Over 400 DJs from up and down the UK and across Europe entered the 2008 D-Joust competition – with only 40 spaces in the regional quarter finals up for grabs the judges had their work cut out deciding who should go through to the live events in London, Birmingham and Antwerp. Those chosen few did not disappoint and following on from the 6 awesome regional quarter final contests we now head into the final stages of the comp and the mother of all battles approaches…

Here is a bit about each DJ and the Guest players at the event this Saturday 18th October. The final Semi before we Hit the BIG one on November 15th!

D-Joust

Owner of the one of the most fun sounding jobs I've ever heard of (comic book writer!). Larry Sun AKA Laurence Powell certainly brings his creativity to the decks. One of the few laptop DJs left in the competition Larry played something like 78 tunes in his 30 minute set and spanned about 20 genres! (ok that's a massive over exaggeration but it was a lot!). A hell of a lot of fun behind the decks and some crazy skills on a laptop he's definitely one to watch.

Worcester based and resident for Midlands based promotion Deuce, MOGS is a hot up and coming DJ with a big following. A diverse and highly skilled entertainer he's known for working the crowd and putting 120% into every set. Brought through by public vote in the 1st Midlands round, he was only 1/2 a point behind Tom EQ, last years overall runner up and 2008 finalist makes MOGS up there in the favorites for this year's title.

Belgium DJ Barry Coleman came a close second in his round against 10 of Europe's best, he was then rightly put through by public vote and he'll be making his way to London to battle. A seasoned DJ with who's played all over Belgium and the Netherlands including a long and successful history in DJ contests, he's definitely one to watch and will be looking to join his fellow Belgian Levels in the finals.

DJ duo House Prophets are Mark Hanlon & Danny Stevens originating from Essex in London and have both been around the scene for over 10 years. The partnership was formed six years ago through a true passion for music and they can be found smashing up the decks all over London and Europe. Their huge support was shown when they walked the public vote which got them into the semis and we're looking forward to seeing what they have for us.

Another highly experience DJ, Spencer has been on the scene for over 10 years. is set in the London was pretty much beat as well as being a whole load of fun. He's played at various venues around the country including Ministry of Sound in London as well as Hed Kandi in Bristol and recently took a jaunt around the world playing in various bars and clubs in Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

Hailing from Berkshire Mumbles is another DJ who incorporates many genres into his set. One of the most slamming London demos we received we were looking forward to seeing him perform. He didn't let us down although didn't quite make it to top spot on the night of his heat. The public wanted more and he's back to show us what he's got once again.

Name: Gina Breeze
From: South Yorkshire

Although I didn't get to see Miss B's ( Gina's) set in the second Midlands round I've been told by a respected source that she absolutely tore up the place. Energetic, bangin' tunes and a real passion for House music, she's a resident for Leeds premier house night Gladrags and has a lot to offer, we're all really looking forward to seeing what she's got.

This week will be hosted by our friends in the Midlands, DJ RCaine, Pioneer DJ Competition Champion will be smashing up the place alongside special guests Boogie Dave and Dave Minns.

DJ RCaine:
People started to take notice of RCAINE (Russ Taylor) when he won the DJ Mag/Pioneer DJ competition in June 2006 @ Earls court. Although he's been actively DJ'ing for over 10 years this was the turning point. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, and now a regular on the Birmingham scene which he loves due to the fact, as he says, 'everyone loves to get off their tits and go nutts'.
He's been part of the backbone of such brands as Rockfall, D-Joust, Raw, Crash, The Canal Club, Archangel and more recently Drop Beats Not Bombs as well as DJ'ing for many top brands all over the UK including a residency at Read the Crowd in Brixton.
For more info: myspace.com

Boogie Dave:
Boogie Dave is the promoter of Drop Beats Not Bombs which was conceived as an antiwar event in 2003. Drop Beats Not Bombs has evolved to become a monster of an event. 3,300 people in through the door at the last one with another 700 people turned away...absolutely amazing! Dave is now also the proud co-promoter of a new era - Rockfall which is held at the Medicine Bar.

Dave Minns:
Who in London doesn't know Dave?! He's been a DJ since 1989 and a sound engineer since 1994 and has played in countless places including Claridges Ballroom London, Turnmills, The Egg Club/Papadiso, The Key Club, The Cross, Pacha London, SE1 Jenkins Lane, Glastonbury 05 & 07 and the list goes on! Dave runs Read the Crowd and also has his finger in various other pies over the capital -Marketing some great events.
