Interview with Scott Lummes

This article is about House Rules - Pay Back Party - Stars of 2009 @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 10 Jan 2009

Scott Lummes is one of London most respected house DJs, a firm favourite at nights such as Dusted and a regular at the capitals coolest and most well known clubs. There's not many places Scott hasn't DJ'd... Well except House Rules that is, but this changes this Saturday 10th Jan as Scott Debuts for us at Plan B. We caught up with him for a quick chat ahead of our first show of 2009...

How did you get first get in to DJing?
It was a natural progression after years of partying, a pair of 1210's that had only seen hardcore, and the underground sound of London that went on to become the (relatively short lived) speed garage revolution. It was all vinyl back then lad.

What influences your music?
Music, as an art, is emotional. It illicits a response. Rhythm, melody and lyrics are all expressive mediums. When you get a group of people all sharing an emotion simultaneously, the room ignites and the party goes off. I look for music that helps me do that, and I try to produce with that aim. I'm think I'm getting there slowly!!

Where in london have you DJ'd, who for and who with?
I've been around for a long time now and been lucky enough to have held some great residencies. From legends like Marshall Jefferson, Jay J, Joey Negro and Norman Jay, through the next generation such as Trophy Twins, Oliver Lang, Seb Fontaine and now I'm excited with the new wave of talent... Party wise everything from Dusted, Puscha, Hat Club and Formula. 2009 sees a continuation of a residency at The Whitehouse and I'm at Pacha in February for the one and only Shiva - can't wait! I've played pretty much everywhere, including the much loved venues that closed in the last year. Must be a fringe benefit of clocking up the years.

What has been you outstanding highlight of your DJ thus far?
There's been loads, and moments happen everytime, but things stick in your mind. Arriving to 3000 stunning looking Latvians dancing on a beach, in swimwear, was pretty awe-inspiring, luckily I had Dan Tickler with me to keep it real. And then there's always Ibiza, but as we all know, you can rely on that one!

What's the craziest thing you've seen whilst DJing or whilst in a club?
Bad things spring to mind, you know, people too far gone on their choice of poison and doing proper wrong stuff, not even trying to be funny. I think they are there to keep us all in check. Worked for me anyway. On a lighter note... the first time I saw the infamous Spiderman in Ibiza. What a man. He's well known now. There's another guy out there, looks like Mr Tumnus from Lion Witch and Wardrobe. Always in DC10. How do these nutters manage to be at every party you go to for the whole week???

What do you think of the London club scene over the past 5 years?
Whilst we've lost some of the best loved clubs, it's also spawned some incredible parties and venues. I think it's as diverse as it ever was, no matter what niche you like your music, or if you just love clubbing for the social aspect, you are catered for. I feel we are at a point of another generation coming through, new ideas, the minimal thing developing into something more as the fascination with K subsides. From accessible house to twisted madness, it's all out there on our doorstep. Go and find it.

What do you think 2009 holds for London clubbers?
Whatever they want it to. Go out with a positive attitude. People sometimes forget how privileged they are to live in this amazing city. You could be in Gaza, or a thousand other hell holes, Slough even. Embrace it, contribute, and spread the love.

What can the House Rules faithful expect from Scott Lummes on Saturday?
I haven't decided yet, it's impossible to plan as you have to play it how you see it when you step up to the mark, I've got some stuff I've been working on that I'm dying to drop on Plan B's Funktion 1 system. Will I get to road test it? I hope so. I've promised Julia McKnight to somebody too, so we got soul appearing in there too.
