This article is about House Rules re-opens at Plan B w/ DJ LOTTIE & guests @ PLAN B in London (UK), Sat 07 Nov
You've just completed another summer residency at Cream Ibiza. What was that like and what were your highlights? Another fantastic summer with Cream at Amnesia, the main room where I usually play is one of the best club spaces in the world. I've loved every minute out in Ibiza this year, playing alongside some amazing DJs. Roll on 2010. Highlight for me was the closing party where I got to play the final set of the season to a rammed out room. Incredible.
You've been working hard on your productions this year with remixes for Beyonce, BT and Leona Lewis to name a few - what's been your highlights thus far? Getting asked to remix Beyonce's new single 'Broken Hearted Girl' has been pretty special. The label loved the job I did, and I have some really exciting work in the pipeline from them as a result. Beyonce signs off the re-works of her music herself, so it was great to have that approved and released. My remix of 'Flaming June' has been really gaining momentum as well, should be released around Christmas., and I've just delivered a remix of Da Hool 'Love Parade', out now on Beatport.
What can we expect production wise from you in the next 6 months? I've been getting a lot of offers for remixes recently and knocking most of them back because I do want to concentrate on my own productions for a while. I enjoy remixing, but writing and producing my own tracks is where my real passion is. I use my own label Beat That to release my more underground tracks, with mainstream house coming out on Cr2 and more upbeat trance and techno released on Maelstrom.
Talk us through your studio set up. I used Logic with a Mac Pro desktop, and all virtual plug ins, mainly from Native Instruments Komplete, with a few Rob Papen gems. Less is more for me, I like to explore all the software as far as I can, get to know it inside out, rather than having shit loads of plug ins that i don't know how to use. I don't have any hardware at all. I also use an Apogee sound card, KRK Rokit 6 monitors and two 18" screens.
How much time do you spend on your music? I'm in the studio every day, so loads. There's no shortcuts with producing your own music, it's all about investing the time to get to know what you're doing. Along with good ideas of course, and knowledge of what will work on the floor.
What do you do to relax and get away from it all? I love skiing, so get away to the snow 3-4 times a year. I also have piano lessons every week still, play sport, watch my team Wolves who are now back in the Premier League, and my girlfriend keeps me busy.
You play and produce both Trance and House, why? I just produce and play upbeat, driving four to the floor, and don't really think about any one style. If a track has a good groove and some melody, I'll play it, and the same goes for productions. I make music right across the board, it keeps things fresh!
What producers are doing it for you at moment? Eric Prydz is still the one for me, the best house producer in the world. I played alongside him at Cream last weekend in Liverpool for their 17th Birthday and his music is just incredible. I also think Sander van Doorn is great, has his own sound, and Sebastian Ingrosso is really coming to the fore now, ahead of Axwell and Angello in my book.
Are you looking forward to House Rules on Saturday 7th November? I can't wait. I've seen the designs for Plan B and it looks world class. The sound system they're bringing in! Bring it on.
What can our crowd expect from you? Quality, upbeat, hands in the air house music. I guarantee they'll leave with a smile on their face.
