KANIO, please introduce yourself?

Hello! Ed Kane here, Kanio is my new Alias for making minimal techno.

First off, I guess the obvious question should be… Why the new name?

Well after working hard over the last couple of years I've reached most of my goals as an Electro DJ and Producer. I'm in the lucky situation now to be able to keep playing out nearly every weekend, but to be able to put more of my production efforts into a new project closer to my heart which is Techno based. I suppose as I work in music I've been more careful to secure a good solid platform to fall back on, before wasting what I had already achieved and jumping straight onto the techno bandwagon.

What are the main differences between your "Ed Kane" and "Kanio" personas? And how do your DJ sets differ?

They couldn't be more different really. If I'm booked as Ed Kane I will play twisted/wonky stripped back electro, and If I'm booked as Kanio then expect bouncy, grooving, party techno. Before I decided to do a new alias, I found at times my sets were becoming slightly confused... Doing this has really helped me find the right direction, rather than confusing the styles.

Which do you consider yourself to be first, DJ or Producer?

Well it was DJing that got me into production, but I'm known more for production.

I'd say its pretty 50/50.

Who inspired you to be a DJ and Producer?

Well when I first got into DJing and that I used to be into turntablism and scratching, so people like Mr Thing, Qbert, DJ Craze inspired me to DJ and going with that producers like Pete Rock and DJ premier.

Under the name "Ed Kane" you have already worked with a load of big producers and some up-and-coming, what are your plans with Kanio? Who would you like to work with?

Well at the moment Iv done around 8 tracks which are coming out on a few different labels including 'Italo Business' in Italy, and Noir Music Black in Denmark. I've still got a few unsigned bits too, so I suppose my plans are to get the remainder of my stuff out there, and keep making more techno tracks. If I could work with anyone it would probably be Format B, their production is a cut above!

Do you pay attention to musical trends when producing or do you just make what makes you feel happy there and then?

I do make the Kanio stuff for myself, but at the same time its important to be conscious of what other people are going to want to hear or buy as well. So, bit of both I suppose.

You engineer tracks for a number of different DJs... Can you explain to us the difference between engineering and producing?

If I engineer a track for a DJ/Prodcuer, then they come to my studio with an Idea, and I push all the buttons and do all the technical stuff untill the track is complete.

Do you like working with other people or do you prefer to be on your own in the studio?

Both can be good. Sometimes working togeher goes really well and it pushes me better, sometimes your ideas clash.

You're headlining the next "FRIDAY NIGHT TOILET SESSION" @ Public Life by playing a back 2 back set with Gav Memnos… What can people expect from the 2 of you?

The bouncyest, grooveyest, minimal techno set this side of Berlin.
