This article is about THIRSTY DISKO!!! @ RS Lounge in London (UK), Fri 12 Sep 2008
With a loyal and a faithful crowd following them wherever they go, Thirsty DJs and the Thirsty Disko have a number of residencies across London's clubland. We catch up with them to talk about their latest residency and the new and jaw-droppingly beautiful, RS Lounge - guaranteed to quench your thirst....
So, where did the name Thirsty Disko come from?
Thirsty Disko is the sister brand or offshoot from Thirsty DJs and it’s basically a name for the nights we host at various events, clubs and venues rather than using our DJ collective name. It symbolises the drink (when you are thirsty) and dance (in a disco) culture in clubland!!! Get it???
How long have you been running?
Thirsty DJs was set up or conceived back in 2003, just over 5 years ago and Thirsty Disko, late last year.
Why are you called Chewy? Who came up with the name?
Haha!!! My surname is Chew and I've been called Chewy since I was a kid, so the DJ name came quite naturally many years ago!!!
What’s been the proudest moment in your professional life so far?
Depends what you mean by professional life, I don't DJ professionally but just for fun - I DO take it quite seriously so my DJ highlight is probably DJing at Space in Ibiza followed by a Main Room set at Pacha Ibiza during NYE to a packed room just before CJ Mackintosh got on. It’s a great feeling walking into Space with your DJ bag and playing to an up-for-it crowd and also at Pacha during peak time to a full house club dropping bombs and the crowd going bananas! Can't beat that feeling anywhere else!!!
Aside, of music what else has been your proudest moment to date?
Probably as per the question above but I'd like to add some quality gigs at The Cross, especially the main room where the system is amazing to play at and the crowd is simply superb!
What quenches YOUR thirst?
A few vodkas, tequilas and beers always do the trick. Can't say "no" to champagne, either, but never mix them all together!!
What did you do for your last birthday and when was your birthday?
I always celebrate my birthday at a foreign city each year but it was at The Cross last year and I had a blast - but a chilled one this year which was nice for a change.
And, how young does that make you?!?!
Haha, age is only a number and it’s what you are inside that counts so make it 21 again this year!!! *LOL*
What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?
Hmmm, it depends on what you mean by 'weird' - as there's loads of weird stuff going on in Ibiza - I'd have to say, like at Space, DC10 or Cocoon and I could probably write an essay about it but it's too explicit for an interview - so catch me next time over a beer and we can talk more off the record!!! However, let's pick one incident at Vegas where I was standing right next to Oakenfold at the Tao nightclub at the rooftop pool terrace and I actually asked him if he was really Oakenfold and he joked that he was his own twin brother which was kinda weird - but in a funny way!!!
What's the best night out you've ever had?
Probably the Thirsty-triathlon-Ibiza-club session from Space to DC10 and Cocoon to finish it off, two seasons ago. It was very memorable to say the least!
So, what's your favourite record of all time?
Depends on which genre as there’s so many to choose from, but out of the blue I’d say 'Born Slippy' by Underworld. It's a top tune and still works in this day and age with some great remixes out and about as well.
What or where was the best Thirsty Disko gig you'd ever held?
It would have to be in Ibiza at Space mentioned earlier above followed by Pacha NYE and gigs at the Cross were very memorable, too.
What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?
I don't usually embarrass myself very often and probably when I slipped over into the mud at Creamfields recently in front of loads of people and a copper! Nice!!!
What can't you live without?
Music, sex and Rock 'n' Roll!!
Before you were a promoter, what was the worst job you’d ever had?
Never really had a bad job to date as I love what I'm doing, but probably getting the reports done for the Stock Exchange listing back in New Zealand for a publicly listed company - and having an all nighter (not partying) to meet the deadline.
What was the last record you bought?
I get sent loads of promos for singles and albums mostly all in CD format or download links these days. Most recently was a 'Café Del Mar' remix promo CD and the Danny Howells Renaissance and Dirty South Toolroom album promos.
Who or what are your musical influences?
A wide range of artists from Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Led Zep back in the day, but dance-wise, it's gotta be Sasha, John Digweed, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Daft Punk, Portishead and many others. Recently there' so many superb DJs / acts around, like Ritchie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Steve Bug, Spektre, The Killers, Justice, Eric Prydz, John Dahlback, Deadmau5. I could write a whole essay about this, too. I DO enjoy various genres ranging from pop to indie, and electro to dance.
Is there anything unusual or weird about you that you'd like to share with us?
Hmmm, you like your weirdness, huh? Well, to be honest there’s nothing weird about me - which sounds kinda boring. Does an obsession and addiction to the black stuff count?
If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?
Crikey! I wish a time machine existed - that would be so much fun! I'd probably go back in time to see the dinosaurs, as I was fascinated by them when I was a kid and probably a few years into the future to see what the world would be like and see what I’m up to which should be interesting. If I didn't like it, I'd travel back to try and change it and then save the world! Haha!!!
What tunes are rocking Thirsty Disko at the moment and refuse to leave?
There are loads of wicked tunes out there at the moment so you have to come down to check us out, but recently at Pacha a few bombs went down well; like the new Chemical Brothers tune, the new remix of 'Sunglasses At Night' (Sebastien Leger's remix) and, of course, the biggest tune of 2008: Eric Prydz’s 'Pjanoo'. Check out my latest live mixes on our Thirsty group on DSI (dontstayin.com or Facebook (facebook.com to download - where the latest one is called "Mystery House". Recorded live at our recent gig.
What do you make of the new RS Lounge?
From the outset and the pictures, it looks amazing and I've had superb feedback from a lot of people. It suits the Thirsty Disko ethos and clientele as our crowd like to try new things out and quality is always up there - so it suits us and our crowd to the tee! Can't wait for our launch on Friday 12th Sept so get on down and join the fun!!
And, finally, what else is lined up for Thirsty Disko for the next calendar year?
There’s so much going on with Thirsty Disko at the moment, where we can do at least 2-3 gigs a week but want to make it special for our crowd so we tend to limit our gigs to around 2 or maximum 3 a month with gigs at Pacha, Egg and hopefully RS Lounge regularly plus some overseas gigs towards the end of this year and early 2009 - so watch this space or just join our Thirsty group on DSI (dontstayin.com or Facebook fan page (facebook.com for further updates. See you on the dancefloor(s)!!!
