Indian fakirs and worshippers of various religions have been piercing & mutilating themselves in similar ways for centuries, but this is certainly a modern spin on it (the under-skin implants particularly)! No doubt there's an element of pain involved, but controlling (and perhaps even enjoying) that pain is part of it too...
