This article is about SICK! ON THE DANCEFLOOR @ seOne in London (UK), Sat 03 Nov 2007
Blende has smashed his way on the scene with a couple of hot productions, most noteably 'Wink Wink' and his blictering remix of the Klaxtons ' It's Not Over Yet'. Next Saturday he is all set to blow the roof off of SEone club in London so we caught up with him to get the low down on the life of Blende
Tell us what’s new in the world of Blende?
At the moment I'm trying to focus on writing some new music of my own, as opposed to doing remixes - there have been a bit too many remixes as of late. It's going well though and I am trying to keep myself busy in the studio as much as possible and not to take on too many gigs, in order to get some stuff done. Hopefully I'll soon have a whole bunch of new songs in order to compile an album that I have planned in for the future.
What have you been up to recently in London and further a field ?
I've had some dj gigs around Europe recently as well as around the UK. I had my debut at Space in Ibiza this summer, so that was quite nice to go down to the sun for a day, although I didn't really get to see much of it as I was basically out of there straight after the gig. But the summer has been good with gigs at clubs and festivals all over really, so that has been quite interesting.
Your playing at Sick ! On The DanceFloor on November 3rd at Seone in London with the likes of Will Bailey and Ed Kane, what sets your style apart from them?
Haven't really heard that much of either to be honest, but of what I've heard it sounds good though. Really into Will's rework of Basement jaxx's 'where's your head at'. I'd say that my own production might be a bit more indie and techno oriented. I've been told that my sound is quite french, so maybe that differs too.. I have always been into quite noisy music, and overall what I look for in the music I tend to play and listen to is a lot of energy. It doesn't really matter if it's electronic music really, as a lot of the artists I am listening to and taking influences from at the moment would probably fall under the indie music category rather than electronic music.
What’s your favourite track at the moment ?
There are a couple at the moment, but one that has been standing out and that I can't stop listening to or playing is Midnight Juggernauts' remix of !!!'s 'Must be the Moon'
The huge remix of "It's Not Over Yet" (by the Klaxons) really announced you on to the scene. What was it like to have the biggest Dj’s in the world playing your track ?
I've always been quite surprised when I've heard people playing my songs as I am, I guess, quite a harsh critic of my own stuff.. But yeah, obviously it's really nice hearing about all the support I get
What`s your favorite club to play in (and why)? Quite hard to say really, there are loads of nice places I've played at.. The End was quite nice to play in, simply for the fact that I have always thought of it to be a really good club. But one thing that stood out this year was a gig I had in Stockholm at the end of the summer. It was at this really small place called Riche, which is usually quite a slow bar with not a lot going on, but the night I played there just took me completely by surprise. The place was packed and people just went crazy. I was basically standing dj-ing up against a wall, and since there were too many people in there jumping up and down and pushing me towards it, I had to spend most of my set pushing myself off from the wall in order to mix at all.. It was fun though
What do you think of the UK scene at the moment?
It seems to me like the UK scene might actually develop the next big thing after this french wave that has been around. To me it feels like London has needed something to emerge from the electronic scene, as I feel it's been quite a while now.. But I'm quite hopeful that it will happen since there are a lot of new acts from the UK that are gradually getting bigger, so hopefully that will include me as well, although I am actually Swedish..
If you could only play one more club ever, what club would it be and what other DJs would be playing?
I don't really know about what club specifically, but I've always wanted to play in Berlin so hopefully I get to do that soon as that has never happened.. I haven't seen Vitalic yet either, so why not have him there as well
Your quite new too the scene but are already making a huge impact. What got you interested in dance music ?
Actually I have been into dance music for more than 10 years ever since I was a little kid. I had my first DJ gig at the age of 17 just after I started, and I was playing quite monotone techno back then. Although it actually took me some time to get into production I used to play around Stockholm, where I grew up, for quite a while. But ever since I started making music in my early 20's back in 2003 it has been my main focus though, and I sort of waited until I got myself a sound that I was fairly pleased with until I tried to get anything released.
What do you prefer (producing or DJ``ing)?
Generally I'd say producing, but sometimes dj-ing is nice too. I just hate the travelling bit What do you like to do away from dance music? Actually I'm not much of a clubbing person, I am not really into going out a lot as I do that in my job anyway, so mostly I just spend my time with my girlfriend when I am not working on production or dj-ing.
Tell us something about you that not many people know?
I met and shook hands with the king of Sweden last year. He seemed fairly amused...
What have you got coming up in the future?
I have a bunch of remixes due to be released very soon, e.g one of Dolby Anol on the Gossip's UK label Back Yard and one of the German producer Lützenkirchen. Apart from that my debut single on Lot 49 is coming out in the beginning of January I believe, as well as a follow up together with Dylan Rhymes and also an EP on 12" Recs under my side project name GDR, that I do together with a friend and producer from Germany who's name is Toby. On top of that I am also working on an EP together with my good friend Vincent (Detect) which is almost finished, so have quite a busy release schedule coming up.
What can we expect from you and at Sick !
You can expect a noisy and energetic dj set, and hopefully I'll get to play some of the new stuff I am intensively working on.
