Interview With Cheshire Catz!!
///Busy Shoreditch types the Cheshire Catz have always had their paws in the right pies. Over the last couple of years they have managed to claw their way up the list of internationally recognized artists, both for their amazing, sweat inducing DJ sets and now more recently, for their excellent production – being hammered by big names – from Sasha, Steve Lawler, James Zabiela, Nic Fancuilli… to Claude von Stroke, Tim Sheridan to Tom Middleton, Sebastien Leger to Funk D'Void…

'Cheshire Catz are awesome... totally rocking the floor at Basics every week, the nu sound of erotic disco!' Ralph Lawson (August 2006)

See what I mean?

Pulp at The Chapel Bar on Sat 9th Dec sees the Catz bring their “Wonky Tech” madness into the humble, but switched on, surroundings of Angel… we caught up with dan cat for a chin wag…

“So, wonkytech eh? What’s with your creating new terminology in this already pigeon hole saturated market? Care to elaborate on what people are getting themselves in for?”

Haha… it was just a flippant thing really but everyone seems to jump on this! We did a demo mix in August and I just scribbled ‘catz wonky tech demo’ on the master CD and it stuck. It just seemed to describe our set around that time. We take influences from techno, house, minimal, electro… it’s modern and twisted and can be pretty fucked up: wonky! We don’t pay much attention to genres though.

“In that case will we get to hear any of your own stuff on the night? What have you got out, or coming out soon?”

Oh yeah of course! At the moment I’d say our sets are usually around 30 - 40% of our own material or collaborations, club tools or edits… silly things we make in the studio.

Out right now we have an EP out on Berwick St Records with Timo Garcia, ‘Squeal’ and ‘Dunewalker’... On our own label
Fakt Recordings our current release is Hooked on hope/Ringshifter, with the Black Russian. The support for these two EPs have been incredible… Sasha used Ringhshifter in a live mix from Zoo House in Dortmund, Germany, and between them they’ve been licensed to 8 compilations now, which is a bit mad.

Next up, just about to go into promo on Fakt is our collaboration with Jnr J, Battle Cat/Bastard Lovechild… 2 twisted tracks… and our first remix since remixing Coldcut earlier this year, this one is for Male Model Machine in Canada (we are playing with them in Vancouver this week) and another EP for Berwick in a few weeks (we . Actually, something else really exciting but I don’t want to talk about it yet until it’s signed!

“Sounds spiffy... where can I hear some online?”

Get yourself to www.myspace.com/cheshirecatz for some tune previews, or www.cheshirecatz.com has a jukebox thingy with demo mixes and tracks. We occasionally update it…

“So you are playing in Canada this week... Ever been before? Musically and nightlife speaking, what are you expecting it to be like?”

I was a tour guide for a few weeks in Toronto just after uni! I loved it there. I’ve seen pictures of the two clubs we are playing at (in Vancouver and Victoria) and they look fab. Musically, we are getting used to adjusting our sets for foreign climes to make the clubs rock… it’s actually quite refreshing, in London we feel tremendous pressure to be right at the front musically – bang up to date – but abroad they are usually a few months behind what’s happening in London, so it opens up a huge chunk of our music that we might have retired in London. Er… we think about this stuff a lot!

"The next PULP is on Sat 9th Dec, have you heard anything about the night yet?”

Well, we’ve known Brad 212 for ages… he’s a wicked DJ and we trust him to throw a good party. I’ve heard that they’ve booked some hot names for next year also!

“The sound system has been tweaked recently (an extra 2000W of bass… yummy) – are you going to tear it a new arsehole?”

Yeah, a wonky one!

“We’re looking forward to it boys, thanks for your time!”
