Now onto the interview....
Paul it’s been quite a while since you have played at Twist. Is there anything that makes Twist stand out for you compared to other parties in London?
The atmosphere really, everyone is always well up for it and it’s always a crowd that appreciates the harder stuff
The Hard House scene has just lost one of it most credible DJs Justin Bourne. Can you assure the clubbers of Britain that you're not thinking about retiring?
Well I was thinking about it a couple of years ago when I was being (mis)managed by Most Wanted, but things are going great now I’ve got Red behind me so no, no plans to retire just yet, I can honestly say I’m enjoying DJing now more than ever as scene seems to be going from strength to strength – happy days
Vicious Circle recently announced the termination of their vinyl releases. What was the reason behind this and is Vicious Circle still going to be releasing their MP3s?
The 2 main reasons were losing our Pressing Plant and Distribution Company, we had offers from various people to manufacture and distribute but we reasoned that setting up new business relationships this late in the game was too risky a proposition, especially when we knew that vinyl was something that we wouldn’t be doing for that much longer anyway, it’s a shame but things just move on, we tried to resist the digital market for a while but at the end of the day we can’t be spending time and money on something that ends up costing us, it just didn’t make sense to keep doing vinyl anymore
What’s the most random thing that a fan has ever given to you and said to you?
Ha! I think if I listed the random things people have said to me it might overload the internet!!!! As for random presents I got given a pair of gloves with a different animal on each finger!!!! They were too difficult to DJ in though, think they’re still in the boot of my car – lol
You’ve played all over the world in lots of different clubs – is there one club/country that really sticks out as your favourite? and which is your weirdest club memory?
The first time I played in South Africa always sticks in my mind, Studio 47 I think it was called, Tidy were doing monthly events there so I went as part of that (I was on Tidy Management at the time), it was absolutely rammed and the hottest club I’ve ever been in, I think I did a 3 hour set, it was an incredible night and even after 6 or 7 years it stays with me as one of the best gigs I’ve ever done, I’ve had some really good gigs in Australia and New Zealand too, Auckland is a particular favourite of mine
What was the last none dance track you bought/downloaded?
I bought the new ‘Muse Live at Wembley’ album last week, awesome band, wish I’d been there, went to see Metallica at Wembley last year though, they’re still as good as ever! The question should be ‘what was the last dance track I bought’! I haven’t bought a dance record in about 8 years, I only play what I make or what I sign to VC or what my fellow artists send me i.e. Ben Stevens, Paul Maddox, Captain Tinrib etc
Obviously you are renowned for a very specific style however have you ever played out any other music genres? If yes when and where, if not what style would it be?
Paul Maddox and myself did a few sets as ‘tenpm’ last year (Tidy Weekenders, Storm NYE), we’d done a few ‘experimental’ tracks and we played those, we planned to push it out but we’re both so busy with other projects that we never got the time so we’ve fucked it off – lol If you could travel back to a past century which one would it be and why? I’d go back to when Jesus was supposed to have risen from the dead, I’d take a video camera and I’d get some proof that it’s all a load of bollocks and next time some Bible basher comes knocking at my door I’d say cop a load of this you daft twat!!!
Djs don't dance is a common view shared by many, is this true in your instance or can you shake your booty with the best of them?
Well, believe it or not I used to dance on podiums and all sorts, and then I discovered E’s and then I’d just sit in a corner all night – lol After that I just got out of the habit and now I’d be too self conscious to do it, but I think if my life depended on it I could bust a few shapes out!!!
Your tatoo's are almost as famous as your music, have you any others planned? Yes I’ll be getting my right arm done soon and I want something on my torso too, always fancied one on my leg too, around the side of my knee, not sure what though. Going to see the guy that did Kate’s Buddha as that is really nice work
What do you do in any spare time you get?
Spare time??? What’s that?!?!! – lol Watch DVD’s, cook for friends, nothing too exciting, I like to relax when I get the chance
If you could swop places for a weekend with a famous personality who would it be and why?
Who is Jennifer Aniston going out with at the moment? I’d be him! – do you really need me to explain why?!!!!!!
