Too Cool for School Jnr J speaks to us ahead of his gig at Twistedisco this Friday!

Jnr J has firmly established himself as a star on the London scene. You just can't help but have loads of fun and dance like crazy when Jnr's around. He's played at some of the hottest parties in London, and now he's knee deep in production with a host of tunes soon to be released, collaborations with some of London's best dj's and even has his own label Devore with his partner in crime, Kriss Darang. We have a little chat with him about Jnr's world before his gig at Twistedisco at the Cross this Friday!

Hey Jnr, Thanks for taking the time to talk to us!

I saw you play a couple of months back, the crowd were lapping you up! Whats floating your boat tune wise at the moment?

Cheers =) at the moment I'm playing a lot of stuff from a guy called Luetzenkirchen...proper bad boy one of those producers where every track he makes is different to the last but always good. I'm also playing a lot of stuff by the Catz and from a label called Plasmapool. Ive never been a huge fan of stripped back music so the stuff I'm playing always has some girth to it.

Whats the best thing about being a dj?

There are so many that I'm finding it hard to pick my very favourite thing but one thing I love about DJing is that I get to dance to a set of exactly what I want to hear and when its works and the crowd are loving it, it's an amazing feeling.

You've been in the game since you were a kid, how has the scene changed in your eyes?

Not sure about kid I got into this when I was 17 although I'm still very childish =$ but since then the music has evolved at an astonishing rate, It's so weird at the mo which is great! I've also notice that things go round in cycles for example I've seen the funky element of house die and resurrect it's self in a different form about 3 times now it's all swings and roundabouts but each time something comes back...it has evolved.

You created your own record label Devore with fellow dj and mate Kriss Darang, whats the meaning behind the name, how did it come about?

It's French for devour...which is pretty much want we want to do to the game as we're both very hungry. Kriss Darang and I felt that there was something missing from the scene and also wanted to showcase some of the unknown talent in the world aswell as work with some of our favorite producers. We embrace all house rather than a particular style or trend...If it's good...Its good no matter what genre its is.

How's the label going, what hot tracks have you got lined up for us?

The label is doing very well atm. Our last release Resistance EP got some great feedback from people such as Rene Amesz, Anthony Pappa and Laurent Garnier as well as DJ Mag giving us a 4/5 review. Our next release is one the Catz and I have done called Baddass African Drums which is about to go into promo so expect it soon peeps. We also have tracks From Kriss Darang vs Harj, Ben Delapena,Graeme lloyd, Kid Dub and a few new guys to the game as well as some big projects that I'll keep under lock and key for now.

You've recently started producing, and in that small time you've come a long way! You've collaborated with the likes of the Cheshire Catz and Kriss Darang. How would you describe your sound?

It's all gone so fast that I'm very taken back. At the mo I'm so new that I dont have a defining sound yet and I'm not that bothered about it at the mo. I tend to make a track after I've played a gig and been inspired for example after playing a gig at Jaded I went home and made a rather bouncy electro number and after a gig at Redlight I made a techno track. It all depends on whats floating my boat... next I'm gonna do a minimal riverdancey kinda track with a jackin beat and a big electro feel to it that has been inspired by country and western ragga fused with Irish drum and bass!!!!!

How's it feel to play your own tracks in your set?

Seeing your own tracks go off at a party is an amazing feeling, especially when it turns out the way you wanted it to and people react to the bits you wanted them to react to. I'd love to get to a stage where I could play mostly my own tracks in my sets but I'm very far from that for now.

Jnr is fast becoming an icon in the London house scene. What shanigans do you have in store for the rest of the year?

I've just signed to Sedition Dj agency so I'm gonna be doing a bit more traveling and outside of London appearances. We're launching a new Devore Party next year in a pretty amazing club as well as some killer releases and a brand new podcast. Also have plan to put more focus into Jnrs Jamm to take it to the next level.

Production wise I've got stuff coming out on Devore, Plasmapool, Phonetic as well as couple of other big labels that I'll keep under my hat for now =)

Thanks Jnr for talking to us !

Cheers and thanx for having me.
